It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Jacob Dylan Chidley in his 27th year following a tragic mountaineering incident in Squamish BC.
Jacob will be deeply missed by his loving partner; Ashley Sherlow. He was the devoted son of Chris and Judy Chidley (nee Hartford) and a wonderful brother and best friend to Kyle. He will be missed by his Aunt Beth Sheedy, Uncles Ron and Wayne Hartford, Grandparents Peggy and Lorne Hartford and Charles and Jeannette Chidley (predeceased). His cousins Abbe Sheedy (Dylan), Emma Sheedy (Chris), Carter Chidley and Uncle Joe Chidley as well as his mountaineering friends Francis, Geoff, Alex and Trevor will miss him.
From the time Jacob was a little boy, he was always thoughtful, kind energetic and inquisitive. Early on, like many kids, Jacob got into hockey, baseball, soccer and can’t forget skateboarding with Kyle and friends but it wasn’t until he discovered the discipline of jujitsu that he really was determined to give it his all. He worked very hard to become better and succeeded surrounding himself with great friends who were like minded.
He attended Durham College and obtained a degree in Business Operations. After visiting a friend in Vancouver, Jacob fell in love with the mountains and was compelled to move there. He started hiking and he would send us the most beautiful pictures. From there, Jacob applied his distinct approach to life – he was determined to become his best. He began to learn more challenging and technical rock climbing, ice climbing, dry tooling, etc. He summited 40+ peaks and travelled to Argentina to climb the Patagonia range.
Jacob finished his last winter season having accomplished the first winter ascent of Snazzy Peak with his best friends. Despite these achievements, Jacob found equal beauty in failed attempts, lessons learned and time spend learning outdoors.
He was in his last semester of Computer Science at Langara in Vancouver and was looking forward to beginning his career in this field.
Due to the complicated search and recovery efforts, a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date (August). Our thanks to Squamish Search and Rescue, North Shore Rescue and the RCMP for their continued efforts. In lieu of flowers, a donation to Squamish Search and Rescue can be made.
