On Friday, May 10, Jaan Antero Krusberg, died peacefully with his beloved wife Glenda Krusberg (Yates) at his side.
His parents, Finnish mother Dolly and Estonian father Udo, escaped the war by train and ski over the Baltic Straight to Sweden, where Jaan was born in Ulricehamn in 1945. Then, at the age of 6 Dolly, Udo, Jaan, and his sister Kris immigrated to Toronto.
Interested in design, music, art and photography from an early age, Jaan pursued studies in landscape architecture at the University of Toronto, moving on to Ottawa, where he quickly found himself a job at a landscaping firm. From there he joined Parks Canada and the path of his career and life was set – one of his first accomplishments was leading a wayfinding project that evolved into the official signage manual for National Parks, including a guide for trails in the parks.
It was while working at Parks Canada that Jaan would meet his future wife, Glenda Yates, who worked in another branch – The National Historic Site Services. They were married in 1970 and their careers and passions would intertwine throughout the time they shared together.
Developing specialized wayfinding and signage became Jaan’s calling card, and a new phase in Jaan’s creative life began when he decided to chart his own course to form a business partnership and eventually a solo business called Jaan Krusberg Design Inc. His practice thrived and across an accomplished career, he was proud to work for major clients including hospitals, airports, museums, the University of Ottawa, and for the Visitor Centre entrance of Parliament and the new House of Commons, in Ottawa.
Active in his work until recently, he complimented his passion for his design projects with other interests: he was an avid photographer and digital artist (a regular in the Glebe art scene), he had a terrific musical ear, he enjoyed reading and working on difficult puzzles, and of course he loved his regular visits to his wife’s family cabin (affectionately known as “Camp”) on Kootenay Lake, in British Columbia.
Jaan is survived by his loving wife Glenda, his two nieces; Chessa Crow (husband Sam), Tara Medley (husband Ian) and his sister Virve Kristina.
Glenda and family are grateful for the exceptional care Jaan received while at the Ottawa Heart Institute.
A celebration of life will be announced at a later date to honour a beloved man of many creative talents.
