The family is saddened to announce the passing of John Reid Morden on May 7, 2024, in Toronto. Reid was born to Isabelle (Reid) and Warren Morden on June 17, 1941, in Hamilton. He grew up in Montreal before the family moved to Halifax, where Reid graduated from Dalhousie University. While at Dal, Reid met the love of his life, Margaret (Keens), and they married in 1964. In 1963, Reid joined the Department of External Affairs and represented Canada in Karachi, Geneva, New York and Tokyo. Once their wanderlust was satiated, Margaret and Reid stayed in Ottawa, with Reid ultimately becoming the Director of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and President of Atomic Energy of Canada. In recognition of his distinguished public service career, Reid was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada and Dalhousie awarded him a Doctor of Laws. His public service career also resulted in being selected as the Executive Director of the Independent Inquiry Committee into the UN’s Iraq Oil-for-Food program. After retirement, Reid served on several Boards, including Trent University and the Royal Canadian Military Institute. One constant in Reid’s life was spending time relaxing at Cache Lake in Algonquin Park. In his spare time, Reid enjoyed golf, classical music, reading thrillers, biographies and books on military history. Reid leaves his wife of almost 60 years, Margaret; his two sons, Michael (Angela) and Geoffrey (Lisa); and five grandchildren, Stephanie (Adam), Vanessa, James, Matthew and Isabelle. The family would like to thank the staff in the Toronto General ICU and 6B for their care. A memorial service will be held in the future. In lieu of flowers, donations to The Friends of Algonquin Park or a Charity of Your Choice would be appreciated.
