Hanifen, Joseph Edward
«Eddie», 80, Salmon River Lake, Guysborough
County passed away on October 2, 2024 at Cape Breton Regional Hospital
in Sydney, NS surrounded by his loving
family.
Eddie was born January 15, 1944 the eldest son of Anselm and
Marie (McDonald) Hanifen. As the eldest of twelve children, that came
with its fair share of joys and responsibility and he was devoted to
his family and a beloved big brother who could always be counted upon
to lend a helping hand, share a pearl of wisdom or present a
treat.
Eddie was in the first graduating class from Guysborough
Municipal High School and went on to study surveying at the Nova
Scotia Land Survey Institute. His career had him surveying in various
parts of the province as a Crown Land Surveyor for 30 years. Then,
upon his «retirement», he started his own business, J.
Edward Hanifen Surveys and continued surveying for another 30 years
until his death. He was proud of his business and enjoyed working with
family, especially in the last number of years with his nephew, Tommy.
He cherished the bond they had.
A lover of all things outdoors, he appreciated the solitary
moments hunting and fishing but loved when he could share those
pursuits with his family and friends especially when going on the 4
Wheeler or making memories at the camp. Although he enjoyed a good nap
and a cup of tea with a treat, he was never one to be idle for long;
tending to the animals on his farm, shearing Christmas trees on his
woodlot and sharing the bounty of his garden with others. He shared
his breadth of knowledge of the outdoors with his children and
grandchildren and by being a 4H leader.
When he was indoors, he enjoyed reading the newspaper,
watching curling, his Blue Jays, and, when he could bear it, his poor
beleaguered Maple Leafs! He also enjoyed playing with various curling
teams at Chedabucto Curling Club, but he appreciated the camaraderie
even more.
Eddie embodied a life of service to his community as a
founding member and Fire Chief of the Erinville and District Volunteer
Fire Department where he served until his death and was Fire Chief for
over 30 years of that time. He was a member of the Guysborough
Lion’s Club and various other community organizations as a
go to person to address community concerns and quietly «getting
it done».
He was a man of deep faith and a parishioner of St. Thomas
parish for all of his life. He was active in the church throughout his
life as an altar server in his younger years to being a member of
various committees in the church, as well as being an Eucharistic
Minister, adult server and a custodian. His faith went everywhere with
him as a person who said the rosary daily, said a morning prayer on
his way to work and watched mass on TV when he could not get there in
person. More than being prayerful, he lived his faith in his kindness
and helpfulness to others as naturally as one takes a
breath.
Always a storyteller, Eddie’s gentle demeanor gave
an air of being somewhat shy; but as a person who seemed to know
absolutely everyone, he was never short on words when meeting someone
and making connections with them. He had a wonderful memory and was a
go to person in the family to make connections. Rarely did there ever
need to be six degrees of separation between people; Eddie had it down
to two or three! He enjoyed telling and listening to a good story and
that is what we will miss most about him.
Despite being busy in his work and community, Eddie was
first, last and always a family man. He was devoted to his loving wife
of 54 years, Willena (DeWolfe). We will especially miss seeing them
spin around the dance floor to a good fiddle tune that they could
never resist.
Also left to mourn are his children: Angela (Bruce) MacKeen,
Shawn (Lynn), Robert (Gwen), Barbara (Brent) Avery, Mary Alisha (Sean)
Whalley and Edward Jr. As his children, we appreciate the strong moral
compass he possessed and hope to live up to the standard he has set.
He was rarely one to raise his voice, a simple shake of the head and a
«tut, tut» was often enough to make us want to do
better.
His grandchildren gave him such joy and he was their
champion. Attending sporting events, concerts and school events had
him bursting with pride. Even when he could not attend in person, he
would watch videos with a grin a mile wide. It was the more personal
moments spent by a campfire, playing beanbag or a game of cards,
fishing and just chatting that they will especially cherish.
Remembering Papa with fondness are Spencer (Meagan), Rebecca,
Caroline, Kristyn (Pat), Bobby, Aiden, Lily and
Brandon.
His brothers and sisters and their partners meant the world
to him and they, in turn, will miss him very much: Joe (Annette), Mary
(Connie) Beaton, Anne (Wayne) MacDougall, Vivian Giffin, Jack (Kim),
Donna (John) Robertson, Jim (Roseanne), Bernard (Jan), Jacqueline
(John) Vosman. He also shared many good times with and will also be
missed by his sisters and brothers in law: Barbara MacDonald, Ada
(Lawrence MacDonald) Hanifen, William DeWolfe, Theresa (Francis)
MacDonald, and Gerard (Wanda) DeWolfe. He was also very close to his
cousins Ralph Rogers, Colleen Hanifen, Edward Kiley and
Donnie Cashen as well as many nieces, nephews and their extended
families.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his
brothers Terry and Robert; parents-in-law Bill and Mary Alice
(MacPherson) DeWolfe, nephews Derek Beaton and Rodney Hanifen;
brothers-in-law Ralph MacDonald, Ivan Frenette and Wayne Giffin; aunts
Elizabeth Rogers, Isabel Hanifen, Theresa MacKinnon, Patricia Hanifen
and uncle Jim Hanifen. We could not forget his friend and hunting
buddy, Barrie Hebb.
The family wishes to extend a sincere thank you to the
nurses, doctors and staff at Guysborough Memorial Hospital, St.
Martha’s Regional Hospital, and Cape Breton Regional
Hospital as well as Guysborough Medical Clinic and Guysborough
Pharmacy for their care for Eddie.
Visitation will be in C.L. Curry Funeral Home 135 College
Street, Antigonish from 2-4 and 7-9 Thursday October 10th. Funeral
Mass will be held in St. Thomas Church Salmon River Lake on Friday
October 11 at 11:00 am. Burial will be in the parish cemetery with a
reception to follow at Erinville and District Volunteer Fire
