Ivan Harry LeDrew Obituary
Ivan Harry LeDrew
November 6, 1935 to December 25, 2024
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our father, Ivan Harry LeDrew, aged 89, on Wednesday, December 25th. Dad passed peacefully at home at Tiffany Village surrounded by his loving family. He was predeceased by his darling wife Elizabeth “Dolly” (nee Boone) in 2016.
Leaving to mourn are his children Wendy Coish (Bruce), Blair (Marlene) and Beth Porter (Ian Penney); grandchildren Stefan Coish (Queena), Madison LeDrew, Lauryn, Madalynn and Juliann Porter; his special niece Minette as well as his special friend Lesley Hickey and her family. Also mourning his loss are his siblings Walter LeDrew (Eileen), June Chilibeck and Jean Conrad; in-laws Carol Rowe, Doug Boone, Linda Boone, Phyllis Riche (Aubrey Brenton), Rosalyn Boone (John Landrigan) and John Stremel, many nieces and nephews and other family members as well as a large circle of wonderful friends and neighbours in Newfoundland and Sunset Palms, Florida
Dad was born in Traytown in 1935 and as a teenager, taught school in Saunders Cove (Glovertown) before coming to St. John’s to complete a course as a Radio Operator. His training brought him to Frobisher Bay (Iqualuit) where he worked for 2 years. During his time there, he developed a passion for the North, its people and the outdoors. After returning to St. John’s, Dad met our Mom, married and started a family. He worked as Chief Engineer at VOCM for several years before he took a huge leap and formed Audio Systems Limited in 1974. With his business well established, he built a cottage in Deer Park where his family enjoyed many years of year-round activities. In later years because of the cold winters and lack of snow, Dad and Mom spent the winter months at their place in Florida surrounded by sunshine and new friends.
Outside of his family and business, one of his greatest accomplishments was building and flying his own float plane well into his sixties. After countless hours ‘in the shed’ with friends dropping by to help out, ‘Dolly’s Tolerance’ made its inaugural flight in May 2000. There was no other recreation plane ever built that could compare; the workmanship was impeccable and he wouldn’t have it any other way. He was known as the person who could fix anything or build ‘an arse to put in a cat’. His shed in Deer Park came to be known as ‘Deer Park Hardware’ and he was called ‘MacGyver’ by those who knew him.
Dad had a number of other interests throughout his lifetime; hunting, gardening, music and singing to name a few. In recent years, you could often find him serenading his friends or reciting one of his favourite poems in Newfoundland, Florida and most recently at Tiffany Village.
Our Dad made many long-lasting friendships in his life, personally and through business. He was considered a mentor by many, family, friends and his employees, and he left a lasting impression on those who knew him. He often picked up the phone, especially during Christmas, and called an old friend or former business colleague he hadn’t spoken to in years just to say hello and reminisce about the past.
He led an interesting life and you could spend hours listening to him recounting many of his life experiences. We count ourselves lucky that Dad had a wonderful, full life and his family, friends and those who knew him were fortunate to have had him around for so many years. We will miss him terribly.
The family would like to extend special thanks to Dr. Amanda Coleman and Dr. Brent Tompkins for their care and dedication during his illness as well as the staff of Tiffany Village for their exceptional care and compassion throughout his stay, especially during his final days.
In keeping with Dad’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Visitation will take place at Barrett’s Funeral Home, 328 Hamilton Avenue on Sunday, December 29th and Monday, December 30th from 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm. Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, December 31st at 11:00 am from Wesley United Church, Patrick Street. Interment to follow at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, James Lane.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Dad’s memory can be made to Wesley United Church or a charity of one’s choice.
