With profound grief and great sadness we announce the sudden passing of Ivan Buzzelli, on August 13, 2023, at age 74. Ivan was the beloved husband of Sofia and the adoring father and father-in-law of Daniel and Lesley, Marc and Chris. Ivan was the loving brother of Vivian Sanfilippo (Andrew), and treasured brother-in-law to Lorenzo Mostacci (MaryAnn), Frank Mostacci (Michelle), Gabriella Mostacci and Mark Mostacci (Linda). Ivan was adored by his many nephews and nieces, cousins, and countless life- long friends. Ivan was predeceased by his father, Joseph Buzzelli (1990) and his mother, Luisa Buzzelli (2023).
Ivan was born in Gagliano Aterno, Italy, and immigrated to Canada in 1951 at the age of 2. He grew up in Hamilton, graduating Cathedral High School and McMaster University, while heavily involved in athletics and the performing arts. Ivan had a very successful career in the human resources field, in both the public and private sectors. However, Ivan’s first passion was musical and theatrical performance. Ivan mastered the drums in his teens and performed for decades in bands and orchestras, beginning with “The Tempest” and most recently performing with ‘Infinity’. Later in life, Ivan became a gifted actor, performing with the “Hamilton Follies”, the “Drury Lane Theatrical Productions”, the “Player’s Guild of Hamilton”, the “Burlington Footnotes” and the “Aldershot Players”, along with acting in music videos and stand-in roles on TV. Ivan was a gifted comedian, a highly sought-after Master of Ceremonies, an exceptional actor and smooth crooner and, along the way, became an accomplished dancer. Ivan was a “scene stealer”, both on the stage and in real life.
Above all, Ivan cherished his immediate and extended family, and all cherished him. Ivan was the love of Sofia’s life since University days, almost 50 years ago. Ivan was everything to Daniel, Marc and Christopher – soccer coach, music tutor, band instructor, mentor and life coach – providing them with unfailing support and encouragement. Ivan was always there in times of need. Ivan had a special, lifelong bond with his sister Vivian. And Ivan had a special affection for his brothers and sisters-in-law in the Mostacci family.
Ivan will be missed for his friendly smile, his cheerful comments, his wit and humour, and most of all for his compassion and understanding. Ivan was a larger-than-life personality with a fill-the-room presence who was unabashedly humble and always sincere, selfless, and respectful. For all who knew him, Ivan was a loving family member, a true friend, a trusted and supportive colleague and one of the nicest people ever.
Visitation will be held at FRISCOLANTI FUNERAL CHAPEL, 43 Barton St. E., on Tuesday, August 22, 2023 from 2-5 p.m. & 6-8 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Margaret Mary Church, 20 Idlewood Avenue, Hamilton, on Wednesday, August 23 at 11:00 a.m. A private family committal will take place afterwards at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, or to a charity of your choice.
