It is with sadness that the family announces the passing of Isabel Catharine Bailey on Wednesday, October 11, 2023, at the age of 96 years.
Isabel’s early years were spent in Druid, SK. Her father, J. F. Bailey, was a pioneer of the district and along with Isabel’s mother, Catharine, owned general stores in Druid, Neilburg and later Saskatoon. Isabel moved away from her family for Grades 11 and 12 to attend The Saskatoon Normal School (later called Nutana Collegiate) to train to be a teacher. She earned a degree in Education with a major in Home Economics from the University of Saskatchewan and furthered her education in Boston, MA to ultimately earn her Masters of Science in Home Economics Education. Isabel taught in Maple Creek for two years before coming to Regina to teach at Scott Collegiate for twenty-seven years. She taught Home Economics, Math, and Accounting. She went on to teach at Central Collegiate and the Government Correspondence School before retirement.
Isabel was an active contributor on national, provincial, and local levels to various organizations in the areas of Home Economics Education. She also held offices in the Monarchist League, Royal Society of St. George, Government House Historical Society and was a member of the University of Regina Senate. Isabel was a dedicated member of the St. Luke’s Anglican Church parish and spoke fondly of her volunteer work and the friends she made there over the years. She was a member of the IODE and University Women’s Club for over 60 years. In 2002, she was nominated by the Monarchist League to receive the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal for her volunteer work.
In her retirement years, Isabel had many wonderful trips, particularly by ship on the QE2. Multiple generations of nieces and nephews would enjoy receiving postcards from around the world, signed by “Aunt Isabel”. In the summer of 2022, Isabel hosted a grand 95th-and-a-half birthday tea for family and friends to reconnect following several years of isolation due to the pandemic. She loved to entertain and was particularly knowledgeable at preparing a ‘proper’ afternoon tea and setting an elegant table. In recent years, she kept her mind sharp by playing Bridge almost every evening with special friends at the College Park Retirement Residence.
Isabel passed away suddenly on October 11 after spending a lovely weekend celebrating Thanksgiving with her friends and neighbors at College Park Retirement Residence, as well as close friend, Dr. Ross Shiels. She was predeceased by her parents, Jesse, and Catharine Bailey; as well as younger sisters, Virginia Spriggs and Marjorie Goodrich. She is survived by her nephews, James (Lucille) Spriggs and John (Prescille) Goodrich; nieces, Kathryn Noel (Roch Lahaie), Christine (Nick) Thille, and Isabelle Lahaie; and great-nephews, Andrew (Tonya) Spriggs, Ken (Kate) Goodrich, and Christopher (Rachel) Goodrich. She also loved visiting with, hearing updates about, and seeing new pictures of all her great-great-nieces and nephews, Maxwell and Benjamin Thille, Emmett and Hannah Spriggs, Liam and Rowan Goodrich and Paisley Goodrich.
A celebration of Isabel’s life will be held at Speers Funeral Chapel, 2136 College Avenue, Regina, on Monday, October 23, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. Aunt Isabel was a generous person and donated to many charities throughout the province. In lieu of flowers, please honor her memory by donating to a local charity that is close to your heart.
