It is with much sadness that we announce the passing of Irma Maria Tintori on December 22, 2024 at the age of 97. Irma was born to Giuseppe and Ida Puccinelli on March 13, 1927 in Montuolo, just outside the walled city of Lucca in her beloved Tuscany. She was the last to rejoin her eight siblings – Remina, Francesco, Dina, Domenico, Lina, Mario, Rina and Antonio.
Much of her childhood was spent with her aunt and grandparents some distance from the family home. They doted on Irma and she spoke often of her happy childhood memories. She also vividly recalled the terror and loss that came with the onset of World War II. She returned to the family at the age of 18, but not before having caught a young man’s attention. While Irma spent her days doing chores with her siblings, her suitor was planning their future. In 1956, Irma left her family in Italy to join Agostino in Winnipeg. She still laughed about being led outside the train station in Winnipeg. There she waited wearing her light coat and leather soled Italian shoes on a frigid December day while Agostino hailed a cab. “Why didn’t he have me wait inside?”, she lamented.
They were married in Winnipeg on December 10, 1956 and remained inseparable until Agostino’s passing in 1993. Life in this new country had its challenges but through hard work and determination she and dad built a good life. Once they were established into a home of their own, they welcomed daughter Laura. Irma took great pride in raising her little girl, showering her with love and fiercely protecting her. Eventually after Laura’s arrival, Irma returned to work at the University of Manitoba. She loved her job cooking for the staff and students at the Medical College cafeteria.
In her free time, mom enjoyed making traditional Italian meals for family and friends, tending to her flowers and vegetable garden and sewing beautiful outfits for herself and Laura. Mom and dad regularly returned to visit family and friends in Italy with whom she maintained active ties. Irma was a strong woman, both in her will and in her faith – traits she reminded us that contributed to her longevity!
In recent years, dementia interfered with the sweet lady with the kind disposition that we knew, but her warm smile continued to melt our hearts. Mom loved being around people and cherished her long-time friends. To those who kept in touch with Irma, know that your calls and visits always made her day. We are forever grateful to Theresa and Rosa for their unwavering friendship and caring. We extend our gratitude to Sandra, Albert and the many friends and family, near and far, for your thoughtfulness and support. Thank you to everyone at the Caboto Centre’s 55+ Program, and at River Ridge I for making her feel so welcomed and cared for. Also, to mom’s regular Home Care workers for their kindness and patience and the Grace Hospital staff for their compassion and care in her final days.
Irma leaves to mourn her loving daughter, Laura (Kelly, whom she loved as a son), sister-in-law Luigina Puccinelli, cousin Sandra Cerqueira (Albert, Anthony and Daniel), numerous nieces and nephews and grand dog Wagner. Flowers are gratefully declined. If friends wish, please remember Irma though an act of kindness. Funeral mass will be held on January 4, 2025 with condolences offered at 10:30 and mass at 11:00 at Holy Rosary Church, 510 River Ave. in Winnipeg. Reverend Father Michael Raj Savarimuthu presiding.
