Irene Joan Abernethy was born on January 2, 1938, and passed on June 11, 2024.
Joan Abernethy (Kelso) was born on the family farm in Stewartstown, Northern Ireland, to parents Robert and Irene Kelso. Joan married another farmer from Stewartstown, Brooks Abernethy, in 1956. They gave up the farming life to immigrate to Canada in 1958, settling in Toronto. Their farming lives had changed. Joan had a career working for CIBC, and Brooks became a police officer with the Toronto Police Service.
Joan gave birth to a son, Paul. Brooks passed away at a young age and Joan raised Paul as a single mom. Joan moved to Thunder Bay 16 years ago to be closer to her son and his family. Joan was a member of Calvin Presbyterian Church and was active with the 55 Plus Centre.
Joan was predeceased by her husband Brooks in Toronto, her parents, brothers Gordon and Jim Kelso in Stewartstown. Joan is survived by her son Paul, daughter in law Susan, grandchildren Brandon (Merissa Lesovich), Kaley Schroeder (Rob), great grand children Blake Abernethy, Beckham Schroeder; her sisters Mae, Elwyn and their families in Melbourne, and countless other family members and friends in Northern Ireland.
The family would like to thank all the staff at the Cancer Centre, TBRHSC 1A, St. Joseph’s palliative care and hospice unit. The nurses there are all angels; true heroes. A special thanks to Dr. Anthes for your care at the Cancer Centre, Dr. Bassuony and Dr. Migay for your care and compassion these final weeks at St Joseph’s palliative and hospice units. A special heartfelt thank you to her hospice nurse, Holly for ensuring Joan’s comfort, and for taking care of us during this sad time.
It was very hard and painful watching you go, but we know you are at peace now. You will live forever in our hearts.
There will be no service, and Joan will return to Toronto to reunite and rest with Brooks.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Simpler Times Cremation Centre, 575 Central Avenue, Thunder Bay.
