It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Irene Biricz, (nee Gersonde). Irene, a devoted wife, loving mother, and cherished Oma, peacefully passed away at the age of 92. She is now reunited with her beloved husband of 61 years, Lorenz, who preceded her in February 2020. Irene (Oma) will be greatly missed by her family; loved children, Diana (Stephen Grand) and Larry (Isobel), her adored grandchildren, Ashley (Ted Currie), Matthew (Samantha), Tommy, Karley (Patrick Graham), Charlotte, and Lauren, her great granddaughters Charley, Hayden and Riley, her sisters Traudchen (Violet), Inge, Helga and brothers Atti and Klaus. Irene was predeceased by her brothers Heinz and Walter and sister Liselotte.
Irene was born in Berlin, Germany. She was the fourth of nine children. She grew up in a two-bedroom home filled with love and laughter. Irene’s unwavering love of family carried throughout her life and has left its gift in all that knew her. Irene was always warm, gregarious, and outgoing, rising to meet any challenge with zeal.
Post war Germany lacked opportunity for a young, brave, and ambitious young woman. In 1953, Irene and her sister Violet, immigrated to Toronto. Soon after landing in Toronto, Irene and Lorenz met while learning to speak English. I was not long thereafter that ‘Ich liebe dich’ turned into “I do”. They were married in 1959 and started their family three years later.
Together they opened Lorenz Antiques Ltd. and what became one of Toronto’s premier antiques establishments. Lorenz and Irene were true partners in business and in life. Complementing each other perfectly with contagious and enduring warmth, sincerity, and dedication.
Irene/Oma was always present and involved with her family. She never missed a game, concert, graduation, birthday dinner or any other milestone. Her role as “Oma” reached far beyond blood ties. Uniquely able to create a sense of belonging, her unconditional love and nurturing spirit resonated with friends young and old. Irene leaves behind a legacy of love and warmth that will forever be with those who were fortunate enough to know her.
