ILONA CALWELL
It is with immense sadness that we announce the passing of Ilona Calwell. She passed away peacefully on August 12, 2024 at the age of 86 after a courageous battle with cancer and the recent loss of her eyesight.
The daughters of Austra and Anton Jurkjans, Ilona and her beloved twin sister, Erika, were born in Riga, Latvia. The little family of four immigrated to Canada in 1951 where they settled in Wawa, Ontario.
Ilona attended Shaw Business School in Toronto and returned to Wawa where she was employed by Algoma Ore Properties as secretary to the mine purchasing agent. Ilona and Jack married June 19, 1959 in Wawa.
After moving to Southern Ontario in 1964, she and Jack settled in Brampton. To the great chagrin of her children, she was employed as an attendance secretary at JA Turner Secondary School. After both of her children completed high school, she then embarked on a very successful sales career with Weekender Ladies Wear. She became a manager with sales staff who she personally recruited from the GTA, Northern Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, Manitoba and British Columbia.
Ilona is survived by her husband Jack. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this year. She is also loved by her sister Erika (d. Don) her son Clark (Janet), her daughter Karen (Douglas) and by her precious grandchildren Tyler (Gina),Caitlin, Rachel, Matthew and Noah, her sister-law Jennifer (Barron) and by her nieces Carolyn (Judy), Kelly, her nephew Scott (Adrienne), Greg (d) and her second cousin Janet (Peter).
She was a skilled bridge player and enjoyed the fellowship of the Burlington Newcomers organization where she made many friends. She was the ultimate people person. With Jack, she travelled to many countries and enjoyed many cruises.
A private family cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life will be held in the coming weeks.

She is so very loved and will be incredibly missed.

Dear Mr. Calwell, Clark, Janet and Karen,
I have such fond memories of Mrs. Calwell from before I even started school, all the way to my late teens. I remember she was so elegant and beautiful and I also remember how kind she was to me when my parents split up when I was a teen and she knew I was hurting. I remember Mrs. Calwell throwing a great party – whether it was for the parents of our little section of Bartley Bull, or for Clark and Karen’s birthdays. Please accept the entire Tobey families sympathies. Our Mom is very ill right now, so we know how hard it must have been for you all lately. My 90 year old Father from Vancouver sends his condolences to you too. I am relieved her suffering is over. May she Rest In Peace now.
