Frederick Ian Rice
A voracious reader, lover of great music from folk to rock to classical, connoisseur of single malt and the occasional Monte Cristo. Ian enjoyed an eclectic career as: an Officer with the Ontario Provincial Police Kingston Detachment; owner of Rice Enterprises, residential and commercial solar installations across southern Ontario; Executive Director of Camp Colombia, the Anglican Diocese Camp-Conference Centre on the Gulf Islands; and an award-winning kitchen designer in the greater Kitchener-Waterloo region.
Numerous organizations benefited from Ian’s volunteering contributions. He was a Scout leader, founding member and President of the Rotary Club of Center Wellington, Board member for Habitat for Humanity Guelph, for two decades Accreditation assistance at Summerfolk Owen Sound, lighting director Elora Festival Quarry concerts and faithful dedication to St. John’s Anglican. Car rallying filled many pleasurable weekends of hair-raising driving in Ontario-wide events and on one occasion participation in the out-of province Lobster Rally Moncton NB. But his longest passion for thirty-nine years: Ian made his mark as a dedicated member of the Canadian Ski Patrol (CSPS) providing first-responder services since 1962 on the hills of Edelweiss, Talisman and Beaver Valley ski clubs as well as for the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver and the 1997 Special Olympics Winter World Games Collingwood.
Born in 1941 in Hamilton, Ontario to Rev. Dr. B. Frank and Helen Rice (nee Knight), he was the oldest of four children: Elizabeth, Patricia (deceased), and Edward. He grew up in Toronto and later in Ottawa, where he met and married his high school sweetheart Sharon Day with whom he shared the next six decades. Ian is survived by his wife and three children, three granddaughters and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral service to be held at St. John’s Anglican Church, Henderson St, Elora on Friday, December the 13th at 1:30 pm. Reception to follow. Those unable to attend are welcomed to join the family via live stream at St John’s Elora YouTube channel. Donations may be made to the Aboyne Rural Hospice or St.
John’s Church Open Doors Project.
Arrangements entrusted to Graham A. Giddy Funeral Home (280 St. David St. S., Fergus – 519-843-3100).
