Ian Ford Obituary
lan passed away peacefully at Peterborough Regional Health Centre on February 13, 2024, two months shy of his 80th birthday. He is survived by this loving wife, Norma (nee Gillen) and his two sons, Christopher Clayton Ford and Jonathan Scott Ford, both of Brampton, Ontario.
lan grew up as an only child in the old town of Erindale, in Toronto’s west end. He was the son of Constance Ford (nee Burch) and John Stuart Ford, who retired in 1960 as Chief Engineer at CN Railroad Telecommunications.
From an early age, lan was a very active and athletic boy who passionately loved the outdoors. His early life revolved around sports, including skating, skiing, and camping and fishing trips, as well as organized sports with his many school friends. lan always spoke with great fondness of these early years, and he kept in touch with many of his Erindale friends throughout his life.
In 1963, after graduating from high school, lan joined the Canadian Navy in search of adventure. After a three-year stint, he returned to Erindale, got married, and started his family.
Outside of work, lan’s adult life was dominated by his love of travel, adventure and the outdoors. This was to continue to almost the very end of his life. In his last thirty years, he discovered travel on cruise ships, which he pursued avidly with his wife, Norma. However, lan did not become spoiled by luxury; even in those later years, he never lost his zest for wilderness camping, hunting and fishing with friends.
lan was a much-loved man with a great sense of humour, and a heart of gold. He will be sorely missed by his immediate family and the entire Gillen clan, as well as the many good friends that he has made over the years. When you become a friend of lan’s, the attachment tends to last for a lifetime. That says it all!
Rest in peace, lan. You were truly one of a kind. You inspired much love, and will continue to live on in our hearts.
