1933 – 2023
It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Hugh Cook, long time resident of Maple, on December 16, 2023. Beloved husband of Jackie for 69 years, proud father of Debra (Jack) and David (Catherine). Adoring grandfather of Jacqueline (Rob), Brianne (Andrew), Matthew and Lauren (Mike). Hugh will also be greatly missed by his 4 great-grandchildren, extended family, and friends. Predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Violet Cook, his siblings Frank, Marjorie, and Norma.
Hugh began his teaching career in a one-roomed schoolhouse, spending the majority of his 35-year teaching career with the North York Board of Education. Later in his career, Hugh shared his passion for reading with the children as librarian across multiple schools, including Spenvalley P.S. Hugh was a historian, doing extensive research on the Cook family history, successfully tracing it back to the 1760’s. He also authored several papers on Vaughan’s history and the book “Some of Vaughan’s Pictorial Past”. Hugh loved to share his love of nature and bird watching, conducting weekend hikes with the Metropolitan Conservation Authority. Hugh received the Vaughan Civic Hero Award in 2012, recognizing his 60 years of volunteer work in local sports, genealogical and historical societies. Many family members and friends were recipients of Hugh’s artistic talents in his favourite medium, wood. From bowls to bird houses, carvings to furniture, each piece was lovingly made and engraved.
A celebration of Hugh’s life will be held at a later time.
