On August 14, 2023, with heavy hearts we said goodbye to Hugh but never to our memories of him. Hugh was the beloved husband of Liz (2019); proud father of Tom, Jamie (Deb) and Mark (Michelle); wonderful Poppy to Todd (Kari), Tye (Erin), Jack and James; doting Super Poppy to Laila, Paige and Norah: loving brother to Cheryle Hamilton (Richard 2021) and Mary Marchildon (Jean-Paul); caring brother-in-law to Bill and Carol Russell and sister-in-law Allie Lou and Bill Mitchell. Hugh spent a good portion of his life in Orangeville, owning and operating Orangeville Transport and Orangeville Warehousing and Storage. He loved northern Ontario, so he and Liz moved to Bigwood Island, Pointe au Baril, when the boys were grown. Here Hugh was elected councilor in the Municipality of Archipelago. That was just the beginning of their Ontario ventures. When it was time to leave the Island, they moved on to Manitoulin Island, then to Seaforth and finally Stratford. After Liz’s passing, Hugh came home to Orangeville. Regardless of where Hugh and Liz lived they delved into community life, meeting and making life-long friends. In each of these communities, Hugh was a proud member of Lions International through which he gave generous and whole-hearted service to the community.
We are deeply grateful for the excellent care and compassion given to Hugh, by staff of the Headwaters Health Care Centre, especially D Wing, and Montgomery Village. The many inquiries and visits to Hugh’s bedside warmed our hearts. These kind gestures will not be forgotten.
Rest in peace dear Hugh.
A Memorial Visitation will be held at the Dods & McNair Funeral Home, Chapel & Reception Centre, 21 First St., Orangeville on Friday, August 25th, 2023 from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm. If you wish, in lieu of flowers, donations to Diabetes Canada or The Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family.
A tree will be planted in memory of Hugh in the Dods & McNair Memorial Forest at the Island Lake Conservation Area, Orangeville. 22nd Annual Dedication Service will be held on Sunday, September 8, 2024 at 2:00 p.m.
