HILL, Allan Murray
June 29, 1953 — June 4, 2023
Allan Murray Hill, known to many as “Big Al,” passed away peacefully on June 4, 2023, wrapped in a quilt, surrounded by the care and compassion of the Central Okanagan Hospice House in Kelowna, BC. Despite life’s challenges, he defied expectations, reaching the joyous age of 69, a remarkable feat for someone who spent almost two decades experiencing chronic homelessness.
Born on June 29, 1953, in Haileybury, Ontario, where he loved playing hockey and doing gymnastics. He started coaching when he moved to BC in the early 80s. His dedication to his craft and his ability to inspire others made him an exceptional mentor.
Allan’s life exemplified the power of community and the strength of human connection. His journey was intricately woven with the lives of those who cared for him, particularly in recent years. In 2020, he found solace and stability in Stephen Village, a supportive housing initiative brought to life through the collaborative efforts of the John Howard Society, BC Housing, and Kelowna’s “Journey Home” strategy.
His vivacious spirit and infectious laughter were legendary. Standing at 5’5, he earned the nickname “Big Al” not for his stature, but for the magnitude of his personality. Allan had an insatiable curiosity about people, always eager to learn their names and their stories. His jokes and impersonations, though outrageously bad, had a way of bringing laughter to even the gloomiest of days.
Allan leaves behind a complex legacy, one that reflects the intricate tapestry of his life. He was a juxtaposition—a person who faced immense hardships, yet garnered uplifting support and love from all those who knew him. Everyone rooted for his success, holding onto hope despite the challenges he faced.
Allan is survived by his daughter Carly, his son Jesse, Jesse’s wife Jennie, his grandson Noah, sisters Ruth and Penny, and his best friend Linda Greene. He is predeceased by brothers Charlie, Wayne, and Bobby Hill and little sister Lori Lee.
Al showed his friends, family, and community that good things can grow, albeit not always in the ways we expect. His life is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and reminds us what it is to cultivate a sense of belonging, even in a world filled with paradox.
A Celebration of Allan’s Life will be held on Thursday, June 29, 2023, at 2:00 pm, in the Family Centre at Springfield Funeral Home, 2020 Springfield Road, Kelowna, BC. Everyone is welcome. It is a day to commemorate his vibrant spirit, so everyone is encouraged to wear colorful attire. The more colour, the better. If you are unable to attend in person, please join the family online by Livestream at the time of the service (see below), a recording will be made available to view shortly thereafter.
In honor of Allan’s memory and the values he held dear, his family has established a GoFundMe campaign: gofund.me/f6c100f1. The funds raised will be allocated toward covering the costs of the celebration of life, including a live stream service so family members in other parts of the country can celebrate Al, too. The rest of the proceeds will be donated to organizations that support housing solutions and homelessness prevention initiatives, such as the John Howard Society of British Columbia, the Canadian Mental Health Association Kelowna (CMHA Kelowna), and Kelowna’s Gospel Mission. Your contributions will continue Allan’s legacy of compassion and make a difference in the lives of others.
Allan Murray Hill will be remembered as a vibrant soul who touched the lives of many. His laughter, warmth, and unique perspective on life will forever resonate with those who had the privilege of knowing him. Rest in peace, Big Al.
