A Husband, our Dad, an Opa, a great grandpa, a friend, a teacher and mentor… Herman Zwiers passed away, peacefully in his home, surrounded by the love of God, his wife Mary and ‘adopted’ family member and caregiver Carla. He is survived by his older brother Roelof, in the Netherlands, and two sisters, Frances Jeninga and Rita Gysbertsen here in Canada, he is predeceased by his firstborn son, John, four brothers and two sisters.
Herman was born on March 10, 1929 in Venlo. He was in the Netherlands during the war. In that time he lost his father, left school and went to work in a tax office. His mother remarried and they became a blended family of 12. When he was 18 he met the love of his life, Mary. He also filled his military obligation and joined the army where he became a sergeant. At 21 he went back to work at the tax office and at 23 he married our mother, Mary. A couple of months after they married they boarded a ship and immigrated to Canada!
A new land, a new culture, and a new language! Wow! Dad had the storybook of Tarzan in Dutch, and found a copy in English, which helped him to learn the language. Reading became his school teacher. He was an avid reader and knew how to study. The first six months they lived with an aunt and uncle, Tante Jo and Ome Roel. Both dad and mom got a job upholstering in a furniture factory and soon after could afford an apartment of their own. In 1953 they were pregnant with her first child…May 1954 they experienced the devastating loss of baby John at birth.
Mom and dad continued on with the strength and comfort God gave them and through the support of family and friends.
Dad got a new job at Bonar and Bemis, a textile factory and before long became a foreman. They went on to have four healthy children, bought a house on McMeans and a few years later sold it and bought another one further up the road where they raised their family. Dad also worked for Transcona Television and as a driving instructor in the evenings and Saturdays.
Mom and dad were members at the Transcona Christian Reformed Church, where they started all of us on a journey of Faith! Dad studied the Bible a lot and shared his faith with many. The word became alive to him as his relationship with God grew.
He became involved in the Freedom of Christ Ministries in Winnipeg and in Hazleton, B.C. where his daughter Grace lives. When in Hazleton, dad ministered in a couple of churches by sharing the word and singing. He loved to play the clarinet outside on the deck of his cabin, where the beautiful mellow sound would carry over the trees toward the mountains.
Dad loved and cherished everyone of us, and I believe we all felt his love.
His greatest gift to us was giving us a deep faith in God!
The care he received at home was beyond amazing! We would like to convey our gratitude to Carla, Chris, Lori, Kerry, healthcare aides … Joe, Grant, Chikuma, Gerome, nurses, and all others who stepped in to help! Dad was surrounded by love!
Thank you to all who visited him and a special thanks to Pastor Ben and Pastor Jeff who blessed him with their visits.
“ You’ve run the race” Dad, with great patience! Hebrews 12:1 You made it home!! we will carry on….
A celebration of his life will be held on Friday, September 29, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. at Covenant Christian Reformed Church 653 Knowles Avenue, Winnipeg. The livestream link can be found on covenantcrc.ca
