It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Herman Camile Vanhauwaert, aged 96 years, at the Misericordia Hospital, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
He will be fondly remembered by his wife, Lorraine; daughter, Rose Fraser (Duncan); son, Dirk Vanhauwaert (Sylvie); and grandchildren: Stewart Fraser (Shelley), Eric Fraser, Julianne Fraser (Robinson), Emilie Vanhauwaert, Eric Vanhauwaert; and great-grandchildren: Oliver Fraser, Navy Bouas Martinet, Charlie Fraser, and June Bouas Martinet. As well he will be remembered by numerous relatives in Belgium and around the world.
Herman Vanhauwaert was born in Izegem, Belgium and moved to Canada in 1951, arriving at Pier 21 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He met the love of his life, Lorraine MacNeil, at the Sisters of Service residence. They were married on December 29, 1954. He moved with his wife and their two children to Toronto in 1969 for a promotion as National Service Manager of Hughes Owens. In 1988 he retired and moved to Edmonton, spending time each year in Mesa, Arizona, playing tennis for 25 years.
Herman was an amazing athlete and played many sports. In his early years he was a member of the National Belgian kayaking team. In his eighties he won both a National bronze medal and a Provincial silver medal for tennis.
Herman’s expertise and love in electronics and mechanics meant he could fix anything. He also had one of the first computers, always belonged to a health club, played sudoku every morning and played bridge two times a week until his death. Above all he loved his family. Sunday dinners and family gatherings brought him immense joy. His wonderful spirit will live on in all of us.
In keeping with Herman’s wishes, a private family Celebration of Life occurred on Wednesday, December 18, 2024.
