Herbie passed away serenely and without pain at Kingston General on the morning of June 30.
Herbie and his wife Therese (deceased 2019) lived on Abbey Dawn Drive from 2001 after their arrival from various previous abodes including Tampa Bay, Montreal and Poughkeepsie, New York where they met in the early 1970s and then married—shortly after meeting when skiing in the Catskills.
Herbie was devoted to Therese and the entire Pariseau family and his own mother and father, after his birth in 1937 in Newark New Jersey.
Herbie had a very diverse lifestyle, his mother immigrating from the Black Forest Region and father from Stuttgart, childhood spent in Union, New Jersey as a public and high school student athlete, joined the US Airforce after community college and served in Greenland, Spokane Washington and Miami Florida where he also played semi pro basketball. Following this, he joined and served the FBI as a foreign country analyst for about 5 years, in Washington, he then joined the United States Postal Service serving in Union, NJ before retiring in life, to facilitate his investment and sporting interests, and meeting Therese, and eventually his philanthropy to many needy organizations.
Herbie loved to play basketball, baseball, tennis, ski and golf, from the Matterhorn and Chamonix, to Whistler, to Telluride and Aspen. And he and Therese enjoyed travel to far and different countries and cultures, never missing a beat for adventure. Herbie was fortunate in his youth to enjoy Times Square and Broadway, watch Jackie Robinson play baseball at Ebbetts Field, Willie Mays at the Polo Grounds, and Mickey Mantle and Yogi at Yankee Stadium.
He caddied at several US Open golf venues, hit balls at several US National Tennis tournaments—even enjoyed caddying in a Bob Hope foursome at his home course, Baltrusol, New Jersey. He loved watching the Montreal Expos and Canadiens, the Kansas City Chiefs and the New York Knickerbockers
Herbie started out as a Democrat, switched to the Republicans and has remained Independent for years. In the day, however, Herbie voted for JFK and Ronald Reagan, in Canada for Pierre Elliot Trudeau, Stephen Harper and recently Justin Trudeau. He was a man of so many different political eras over the years, and would never support Trump and Maga or Biden.
Herbie’s life interests and persuasions were preserved after his schooling and Christian faith development, from being raised a Presbyterian in NJ, to his Bath United Church congregation—always seeking to play down pro and anti-semitism and other racial and cultural biases he experienced through his younger years, a protestant German mistakenly thought to be of the Jewish faith, and a basketball player whose friends and teammates were black and white and brown, from the ghettos of New York and New Jersey to Montreal, his alma mater Concordia University and Dawson College where he served on the Board of Regents.
Herbie is fondly remembered by his adopted nephews from Therese’s family, Marc Andre in Copenhagen, Franscois in Singapore and Pierre Paul of Montreal—as well as so many friends from Tuscon Arizona (Frank) to Houston Texas (Diane and Wes) and Cape May New Jersey (his boyhood friend Donald Barber and Renee) and his truly beloved Loyalist community friends — Herbie shared his thank you for these friendships to so many through a pre-passing luncheon at one of his luncheon faves in Kingston.
Therese and Herbie will make a solemn trip back to his childhood home in Union, New Jersey to be interred privately at the Hollywood Memorial Gardens, next to his beloved parents.
PS. the photo is of Herbie from his last cruise, Basel to his Black Forest village and birthright in Dobel, Strasboug and Stuttgart ending in Amsterdam.
