With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Henry “Sonny” Erickson, age 88, on Saturday, April 15, 2023, in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Sydney on June 17, 1934, he was a son of the late Harold “Rezer” and Elsie Mae (Molly) Erickson, and the eldest of four boys.
Early in his career, Sonny was employed at Sammy’s Lucky Dollar grocery store as a meat cutter. He later delivered milk for the Cape Breton Dairy (Scotsburn). His route took him from Baddeck to Whycocomagh, Iona, Little Narrows, Christmas Island and many surrounding communities.
For 38 years Sonny delivered milk, news, and treats of juice and chocolate milk to generations of families in these communities. Many stories, jokes, and occasional secrets were shared with his customers, some of whom became his closest friends. With a heavy heart Sonny retired in 2004, feeling truly grateful for a rewarding career.
Throughout his life Sonny was an avid bowler and member of the 400 club. He enjoyed the local harness racing scene and owned several horses. Upon retirement, Sonny became a member of the neighborhood garage crew aka “the boys” in Frog Town.
Sonny is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Norma (MacKillop); daughter, Christa (Greg) MacIsaac, Sydney; sons, Derrick (Diane) and Brian (Andrea), both of Sydney; brother, Harold “Buddy”, ON; grandchildren, Shannon, Ashley, Kevin, Brittany and Skylar; and great-grandchildren, Abigail, Noah, Nate, Wynn and Beckett.
Sonny was predeceased by his brothers, Ralph and Walter.
In his later years, Sonny became a temporary resident of the Glace Bay Hospital. Sonny then moved to the MacGillivray Guest Home. We would like to thank the staff for the care and patience they provided.
We would also like to give a special thank you to Sonny’s son-in-law, Greg for the extraordinary care he provided to our father/grandfather while he was awaiting placement at MacGillivray Guest Home.
Finally, we would like to thank the staff of the Palliative Care unit in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for their compassion and care during a very difficult time.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. Visitation will take place Thursday, April 20th, 2023 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm in Sydney Memorial Chapel. Funeral service will be held Friday, April 21st at 10 am in the Chapel with Rev. Evo DiPierro officiating. Interment will take place in
Resurrection Cemetery at a later date.
Memorials may be made to the MacGillivray Guest Home or the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia
