1926-2023
It is with heavy hearts we say goodbye to our father, husband, grandfather and great grandfather.
Henry was born in Kombornia, Poland. He attended school in Krakow at the time that Germany invaded Poland. When German soldiers stormed his school Henry and all the male students were put into trucks and sent to German factories as forced labourers. He was 15 years old at the time. After the war, while still in Germany he enlisted into the Polish armed forces under U.S. command. Their task was to guard German prisoners of war and the supply barracks. In 1949 he arrived in Canada to Fort William to join his father. His first job was as a lumberjack after which he worked for Abitibi Mission Mill until his retirement in 1987. Henry retired early saying that he wanted to enjoy his camp in Shebandowan, his favourite place. He loved to fish, pick mushrooms and blueberries and grow a garden. Henry never hunted. He loved animals and often told stories of his lumberjack days when he would share his lunches with friendly black bears that never attacked him. He was a lifelong member of the Canadian Legion Polish Branch #149 and a dedicated parishioner of St. Casimir’s Roman Catholic Church where he spent many years helping to finance the church as leader of the pierogi making group. Left to mourn his passing are his wife of 69 years, Bronia, his daughters, Barbara Dlugosz (Slawomir Kiraga) and Helen Cimone (Joseph); 5 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren. He is also survived by 2 sisters, Bernice, in New York and Wladzia in Okotoks, Alberta, and numerous cousins and relatives in Chicago and Poland. He was predeceased by his parents and 3 brothers.
In lieu of flowers donations to St. Casimir’s Parish would be greatly appreciated.
A Funeral Mass for Henry Dlugosz will be held at St. Casimir’s RC Church on Mackenzie St. at 11:00am on Tuesday, November 14, 2023, with prayers beginning at 10:00am.
