Obituary
KORCE, Helen (nee Žurga) – It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Helen ‘Jelka’ Korce at the age of 99 at Hospice Niagara. On Tuesday May 7th 2024, with her loving family by her side, Helen was given her angel wings and called home to heaven. Helen is reunited with her late beloved husband Albin Korce (2006). Loving mother of Mayda Korce, and cherished grandmother of Marina Korce. Predeceased by her loving parents Ivan and Julijana (nee Kuzele) and her siblings Julka, Ivan, Anton, Marica, Josip, Vlado and Drago. She will be fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews and in-laws from both the Žurga and Korce families, and many dear friends whom she loved dearly.
Helen lived a long, incredible life. She was born in Strojiči/Plešce, Croatia on December 24th, 1924 and was proud of her Croatian heritage. As a little girl, she enjoyed playing by the creek and helped on the family farm carrying milk and feeding the pigs. When she was older, she enjoyed sewing and making clothing for the villagers. Helen lived through WW2 and at the age of 26, she made the brave decision to leave her family with only one suitcase to seek a better life in Canada. After a rough journey by cargo ship, she arrived in Halifax on January 25th,1951. She vowed she would kiss the ground if she made it to Canada, and that is what she did! Helen then traveled to Brockville, Ontario where she worked one year as a homemaker for a family and saved her money to buy a sewing machine to make clothes, dreaming of one day owning her own dress shop. On April 10th, 1952 she moved to Port Arthur, Thunder Bay to meet with her brother, Anton. It is there where she met the love of her life, Albin. It was fate that brought them together. They were married on November 8th, 1952 after only knowing each other for 5 months. It truly was love at first sight. They later moved from Thunder Bay to Toronto and then on to Niagara Falls. They lived a beautiful life together for 54 years before Albin’s passing in 2006.
Helen had a great love for her family, especially for her “girls”. She deeply loved and was devoted to her daughter, Mayda, who has Cerebral Palsy and was incredibly proud of her granddaughter, Marina, who she referred to as “the greatest joy and blessing” of her life. Helen was a beautiful person with a heart of gold, an angel here on earth. Everyone who was blessed to know Helen was touched by her warm, gracious spirit and beautiful smile. She never forgot to express her gratitude to others, always thanking those who helped her. She loved hosting family and friends at her home and ensured her guests enjoyed a wonderful spread. “Eat more, there is lots of food for everyone” she would always say. Helen had a positive outlook on life and enjoyed life to its fullest. She was young at heart and never let her age stop her from doing what she loved. Her goal was to make it to 100. She lived on her own until she was 96 and loved spending time outside tending to her beautiful garden. Helen enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. She loved sewing, listening to Croatian and polka music, dancing, flowers, toast with jam, coffee, lunch at Bettys, apple pies and watching Wheel of Fortune and The Bachelor. She made the best apple strudel, crepes and potica. Her cabbage rolls and Sunday dinners will also be greatly missed. She was adored as “GG” by Joey, the family cat, and enjoyed his snuggles. Helen’s most favourite pastime was spending time at the casino with her daughter and granddaughter. Somehow all of her aches and pains would go away as soon as she entered and her eyes would light up whenever she got a win. When asked what is the key to living a long and happy life, Helen said “ you just have to be patient, work hard and don’t expect too much. Take care of one another. Don’t expect anything in return, just do good! Be happy, live your life, and go to the casino too!” Helen had a strong will to live, no matter what challenges came her way. She always made the best out of every situation and was a warrior as she courageously fought a terrible form of skin cancer in the last year of her life, a strength like no other. She never complained and fought with sheer grace. She will be greatly missed by all who were blessed to know her.
The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks and gratitude to the many doctors, nurses and PSWs who cared for Helen throughout her final journey. A special thank you to Dr. Ahmed, the Walker Family Cancer Center team, the staff at Cavendish Manor, and Geneva from Paramed for your loving care. Hospice Niagara, thank you for taking such good care of our dear Helen during the final and hardest last two months of her life. You are all angels here on earth who brought her peace and comfort. Helen was deeply touched by your love.
Granny, you were and always will be the heart and soul of our family. Although our lives will never be the same without your loving presence, we will forever cherish the memories we have created together and were blessed to have your love for all these years. We had a very special bond, the three generations. We will deeply miss your sweet smile, laugh, and warm, gentle hugs…and of course going to the casino with you. You always said how lucky you were to have us but I hope you know how blessed and fortunate we were to have YOU in our lives- the BEST mother and grandmother anyone could have. Thank you for all you have done for us in our lives, for all your sacrifices and for teaching us important life lessons that shaped who we are today. You taught us the importance of hard work and being strong…to show kindness to everyone and to take care of one another. Most of all, you showed us through your example how to love. Thank you for all the love you gave us all these years. We know you fought so hard to live because you didn’t want to leave us. You always felt the need to take care of us but now it is time for you to rest and be in eternal peace. It was our greatest honour to take care of you during this journey and to be by your side until the very end. We are comforted to know that you are reunited with Grampy and all your family and friends in heaven. You are the most beautiful angel, dancing in the sky. We will miss you dearly, but we know you will always be with us- our precious guardian angel. We are so proud of you for your strength during these past few months and you will always be remembered for your courage, grace and resiliency. Congratulations on a life well lived, for 99 beautiful years. We will always love you, Granny.
“Thank you everyone for being in my life, may God bless you all” – Helen
