It is with deep sadness we announce the
passing of Helen Jean Black, age 88, of
Brookdale, NS. Helen passed away on Saturday, April 20, 2024
at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre.
Born in Leicester, she was a daughter of
the late Cecil and Eva (Carter) Gilroy.
Helen was dedicated to family and
community throughout her life. Raising 6 children on the farm with
Bobby, she worked hard as an equal partner, managing the household and
farm finances, yet still finding the time and energy to contribute to
her community.
In her early years, she was a 4-H
leader, as well as a volunteer for Brookdale Elementary Home and
School. She canvassed for various causes over the
years. Helen was a proud 61 year member of the Brookdale
Sewing Circle; quilting, and catering for many weddings and local
events, as well as club treasurer for 43
years.
Many people enjoyed her farm
hospitality, which included delicious meals, desserts and
conversation. Helen loved to chat and
socialize.
Hosting large family gatherings were of
great importance to her and were enjoyed by all. She was very proud of
her family and their achievements loving each and every one with her
generous heart.
Whether Helen, Mom, Nanny or Great
Grammie, the name meant love, warmth, and welcome. She was the anchor
of our family and she will be greatly missed.
Helen will be dearly missed by her six
children, David (Linda), Brookdale, Grant (Anne), Fall River, NS, Paul
(Trudy), Lorneville, NS, Dale (Andrew) Davis, Salem, NS, Ronnie,
Amherst, and Robbie, Brookdale; twelve grandchildren, Angela (Tom),
Brian (Christine), Sarah (Matt), Amy (Brendon), Coleman (Ainsley),
Ayerica (Kyle), Evan, Blair (Tiffany), Oliver (Andrea),
Emily, Kennedy and Tanner; fourteen great grandchildren; a brother
Carl (Joan) Gilroy, Amherst; sister in law Mary Gilroy; as well as
nieces, nephews and extended family.
In addition to her parents, Helen was
predeceased by her husband Robert Black; brother Elmore
Gilroy.
Arrangements are under the care and
supervision of the Jones Family Funeral
Centre, 70 Church Street, Amherst, NS
(902-667-8777). Honouring Helen’s wishes cremation has taken
place. A celebration of her life will be held from the
funeral home on Sunday, April 28th, 2024 from 2-4 pm with a time to
share memories to take place at 3 pm.
Donations in her memory may be made to
the Brookdale Sewing Circle or the Cumberland VON.
