It is with immeasurable sadness that
the family announce the death of Helen Demont (van der Wensch), of St.
Stephen who passed away from an arduous battle with Kidney Failure and
Lung Cancer at the age of 66. Helen was born in Niagara Falls to first
generation immigrants, Jan van der Wensch of the Netherlands and
Theresia van der Wensch (Ecker) of Austria. Helen is survived by her
daughter, Theresa Demont (Sean MacCready), two grandchildren, Quinn
and Remi MacCready, her spiritual companion and best friend Michael
Driscoll, sisters Linda and Margaret van der Wensch, and several
nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her sister Whilhemina Lewey
(van der Wensch) and her brother Jan van der Wensch.
Being the child of German and Dutch
speaking farmers in Cornhill ensured a tough childhood for Helen, but
she had managed to break generational trauma and rarely spoke of the
hardships she faced growing up. Despite her upbringing, she became a
woman who will be remembered not only as hardworking but as a kind and
gentle soul who was always in the service of others. She could also,
when challenged, remind those of the strength she acquired from
growing up on a farm.
Helen retired from the Flakeboard with
33 years of service. She was the first female Press Operator and took
pride in all aspects of her job. She loved her coworkers and
was well respected by them and often noticed for how hardworking she
was.
Anyone that knew Helen knew
she had a zest for life. She was the kind of woman who would go
anywhere or try anything at least once. She collected hobbies and
activities the way a Girl Scout collects badges. She loved being in
nature and was an avid canoeist and member of the Fundy
Paddler’s Club. She also loved cross country skiing, was an
avid crafter, painter, sewer and jack of all trades. Helen was an
eminently skilled quilter and member of The St. Croix Cotton Mill
Quilters and the Anglican Parish of St Stephen Hand
Quilters.
Nothing however, lit up
Helen’s eyes and smile more than her two grand daughters
whom she loved and cherished dearly, and who will be remiss in not
having more precious time with their Oma.
We will forever cherish the beautiful
memories you gave us and honour your spirit in our hearts
forever.
Mass of Christian Burial will be
celebrated at St. Stephen’s Roman Catholic Church, Milltown
