Helen Catharine (Wegford) Ehrat spent her final hours on this earth just the way she loved best – surrounded by the love of her family.
She slipped away peacefully at Grand River Hospital, after a short battle with pneumonia, on the first sunny, warm spring day of the year – Sunday, April 2, 2023. Outside, the robins sang the same song as the day she was born in Philipsburg, Ontario, on another warm and foggy spring day – March 8, 1936. Helen’s mother loved to tell the story of how loudly the robins sang on the day she arrived.
Growing up in Philipsburg, Helen had the run of what was then known as the Robitsch Inn, where she was the only child of her parents, Stanley and Verna (Hoerle) Wegford. Raised in a multi-generational home – with her grandparents Charles (Karl) and Katharine (Katie) and her aunt Annie and uncle Clarence – Helen knew from an early age that love is the greatest gift that one generation can leave to another.
She would tell you that knowing and loving each of us was the greatest success story of her life.
She especially loved dad. Ron (Ronnie) Ehrat grew up across the road from her in Philipsburg, and though he was a couple of years older, they both attended SS No. 17 and the New Hamburg Continuation School. She spent many date nights watching Ronnie on the ice with the Philipsburg Chevs before they married on July 6, 1957. Together, they walked through everything that came their way for nearly 66 years.
They were blessed with two daughters who were adored by their mother and who inherited her kind heart and cheeky sense of humour. She is survived and deeply missed by daughters Kathy Skowron (Reynold) and Chris Ehrat. Her grandchildren, Chloe (Mike) and Ronnie, have so many good memories that they could never forget what a kind and loving grandma they were blessed with. She is also loved and remembered by Ron’s sister and brother-in-law, Sheila and Grant McLaughlin, and their children, Mike McLaughlin, Susan, and Glenn Hesjedahl (Conor and Evelyn). Also lovingly remember by her only living first cousin, Carol Wegford (Dawn). Mom was predeceased by her parents and her loving in-laws John (Hans) and Eva (Forler) Ehrat.
Over the years, before raising her children, Helen worked for Brock, Davis, Dunn and Broughton Chartered Accountants before landing a secretarial job outside her front door at Waterloo-Oxford District Secondary School. She retired from W-O as office manager in 1983.
Upon retirement, Mom and Dad bought their cottage on the Bruce Peninsula and spent many wonderful summers at the lake. Horseshoe tournaments and holidaying friends, live music in the boathouse, with singing and dancing to celebrate their wedding anniversary each year – the memories mom cherished most. And we do too.
In the days ahead, we will remember that we only have such an empty space without her because we were blessed with someone who loved us so much that it occupied an entire part of our souls. We are forever altered by the loss, as we are by the love.
There will be no visitation by request of the family—private family service at a later date. As expressions of sympathy, donations to Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Philipsburg (Accessibility Fund) – 3357 Erbs Rd, Baden, Ontario N3A 3M6 or a charity of one’s choice would be appreciated by the family.
Funeral arrangements entrusted to the Mark Jutzi Funeral Home, New Hamburg.
