BECAUSE THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD
I HAVE EVERYTHING I NEED—’
Helen Marie Bacon went Home to Heaven, peacefully at her home in Listowel, with her lifelong friends Roberta and Ruthie at her side, on Wednesday, August 28, 2024 at the age of 85 years.
On February 20, 1939, gifted chickens were already crowing in the front yard of Rev. Dr. Leonard & Mildred (Dickinson) Bacon. The doctor knew at once he was too late for the birth of the new Bacon baby. He had travelled 100 miles from Chengdu to Lushan in West China ahead of time to assist in the birth. But Helen Marie Bacon had come early. Yes – she was ‘made in China’ as her missionary parents were serving Jesus Christ in that country at the time. She was their second child, a sister to Dorothy May Bacon. Dorothy was known in Mandarin as “Jay-Jay” being the older sister, and Helen was known as “Mei-Mei” as the younger one.
Helen lived a very full and grateful life. She came to know just what “Amazing Grace” really meant at the age of 18 when in nursing at the Ottawa Civic hospital. Father God guided her through nursing on to Toronto Bible College (now Tyndale)-on to Cree Outposts as a nurse (Manitoulin Island and Waswanipi Reserve-Quebec) – on to McGill University- to Missionary Internship in Detroit — on to Thailand where she served in Christian medical work and hospitality ministry.
For 40 years she served there with OMF (Overseas Missionary Fellowship formerly CIM China Inland Mission). That time naturally included times of Home Assignment in Canada— many deputation meetings, trips, medical and Theological studies, and family and prayer partner times.
She became ‘retreaded’ (not retired ?!) in Listowel, Ontario, in 2005, along with Roberta Fryers and Ruthie Charter who shared her years in Thailand. They settled into a God given home via Dr. Emily Berkman who was a faithful prayer partner to Helen. Dr. Em went to her Home in Heaven in January of 2020.
Helen leaves behind her sister Dorothy Kerker of Barrie (late husband Rudolph), her nephew Jeffrey Kerker and his wife Karen and their daughters Kathryn and husband Eric, Lauren, Allison, her niece Wendy Dennis and her husband Mike and their sons, Cole and Ty.
Helen felt she had several families; her biological family which she regretted not really getting to know because of living overseas for so many years, her OMF family, her Thai and Malay friends, her Thai Trio family Bertie and Ruthie, and then her church family at LEMC.
Her request to those reading this is: May you really know “Amazing Grace” as found in Jesus Christ!
The Celebration of Helen’s life will be held at Listowel Evangelical Missionary Church on Wednesday, September 4, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be held one hour prior, and a continued time of sharing and fellowship will follow.
The funeral will be livestreamed.

She will be buried with her parents in MacLaren’s Cemetery, Wakefield, Quebec.
Memorial donations to Overseas Missionary Fellowship (OMF International) or to a charity of your choice would be appreciated, and may be made through the Eaton Funeral Home, Listowel.
