It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Hazel Thompson (née Parkinson). Surrounded by her family, Hazel passed away on September 16, 2024, at Vernon Jubilee Hospital after a brief illness. Hazel had just celebrated her 103rd birthday on August 25.
Hazel was raised in Armstrong on a farm at Hullcar along with her two brothers, Floyd and Jack Parkinson. Her parents, Stan and Nellie (née Hunter) and both sets of grandparents were also raised in Armstrong. Hazel was very proud of her deep roots in the community.
Hazel married Bill Thompson in 1942. They lived on a small farm in Hullcar where they raised five children, until they moved ‘to town’ in the early ‘60’s.
Among her many talents, Hazel was an accomplished seamstress, quilter and gardener and she loved to knit, paint, and cook. She was a voracious reader and faithfully did the crosswords every morning for decades and right up until her passing.
Hazel loved to travel, and she and Bill traveled across Canada and the western States.
After Hazel moved into Heaton Place, she became a deadly Scrabble player!
Hazel had a keen interest in, and an encyclopedic knowledge of Armstrong and area history and she loved to share that knowledge with others. Her memory was astounding!
Hazel was predeceased by her son, Murray, in 1952 and her husband Bill, in 2002. She is survived by her four children, Heather (Duncan) in Armstrong, Karyn (Robin) in Whitehorse, Gary in Prince George and Stacey in Vancouver; five grandchildren Pamela (Glenn), Rob (Janet), Terri-Lin, Dylan (Tanya) and Tara (Cole); and nine great grandchildren, Zoe, Nik, Aiden, Lauren, Gabriel, Ava, Ella, Jett and Jagger. Hazel loved being a grandmother and great grandmother and always looked forward to visits.
Hazel will be greatly missed by her family and friends. At Hazel’s request, there will not be a formal service. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your charity of choice.
The family would like to thank the staff of Heaton Place for their care and attention to our mother over the past 12 years, and to the staff at Vernon Jubilee Hospital and a special thanks to Dr. Viljoen for his care of Mum, especially this past three weeks.
