Age 75, passed away on February 23,
2024, in Antigonish. Lorraine was born on December 5, 1948, to Sidney
and Helen (Malay) Day, Chaswood, NS.
Lorraine is survived by sons
Phillip (Rebecca), Millbrook, ON and Randy (Lauri Shaw), Antigonish,
NS. She is also survived by her grandchildren Lydia Shaw-Peters,
Antigonish, NS; Reed and Julia Peters, Saint John, NB; and Olivia,
Felicia, and Derek Peters, Millbrook, ON.
Lorraine and her twin brother
Leonard were the babies in a family of eight. Lorraine is survived by
her sister Ivy Buckley, brothers Sidney (Elaine) and Leonard (Denny),
sister-in law Rose, and many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents,
Lorraine was predeceased by her sister Helen Livley (Harvey), brothers
Stuart (Florence), Lawrence, and Donald (Connie), brother-in-law Bill
Buckley and former husband Gerald (Jerry) Peters.
Lorraine was a multi-talented,
hard-working woman who excelled in many areas. Love, kindness and
laughing were the cornerstones of Lorraine’s character. She
always wanted the best for all those she worked for or with. A trained
cosmetologist, Lorraine spent many years cutting, coloring, and
styling ladies’ hair. After marrying Jerry, the couple moved
to Antigonish to work and raise a family. Aside from hair styling,
Lorraine also provided childcare for several families during her days
in Antigonish. She had many stories of those experiences and always
kept abreast of the children she had looked after. She was very
involved with the Christopher’s Leadership Course as
participant and an instructor who loved helping people develop
leadership skills and confidence through public speaking. Lorraine
also worked many years in retail, working in the CNIB canteen at St.
Martha’s Regional Hospital, The Red Apple Store and Saan in
Antigonish. In 1998, Lorraine moved back to the Truro area to continue
working and to be closer to her siblings. Over the next sixteen years,
she managed the cosmetics departments of Shoppers and later Lawtons in
Truro. Mom enjoyed working and always put a full effort into her
employment and truly enjoyed helping people find products they could
use as well as sharing laughs with co-workers.
While Lorraine enjoyed working, her
main focus was always on her family. She was a loving daughter, a
supportive sister (sister-in-law), a beloved Mother and Nana. She
loved to laugh and always tried to make others smile. She was a
talented seamstress who could make costumes, curtains, bedspreads, and
anything to make a home cozy. She could re-upholster furniture, fix a
bike, or do small household repairs that were caused by her two boys.
Lorraine would often make fun of her cooking skills, but her family
loved her turkey dinners and creative birthday cakes, which captured
the current interest of her boys at the time. Lorraine loved her boys
and all their friends. People were always welcome in her home, and she
was genuinely interested in their lives. Lorraine was always fun to be
around and was loved by her many nieces, nephews, and their families.
Lorraine had a huge heart but reserved a special place for each of her
six grandchildren. She was their biggest fan and supporter. She was a
thoughtful gift giver who spent time to get unique presents her
grandchildren would cherish. Lorraine loved to travel, to sing, and
spend time with her family and greatly appreciated the years and
support of her brothers and sisters. Mom will be deeply
missed.
The family would like to thank the
many caregivers who assisted and were kind to Mom at the RK MacDonald
Nursing Home.
A Funeral service and burial will
be held in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to
the Alzheimer Society of Canada.
Funeral arrangements are under the
direction of C.L. Curry Funeral Services, 135 College Street,
Antigonish, NS.
