Hazel’s Obituary
Hazel Irene Ponte (nee Mattatall) passed away peacefully at Willow Lodge on Tuesday, August 29th, 2023, with family by her side. Hazel was the daughter of Lester and Catherine (Purdy) Mattatall. She is survived by brothers, Mason, Gerald (Pat), Carl (Janet), Malcolm (Chris), sister Lynn (Tom) MacNeil, sister-in-law, Sharon and a large crew of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by brothers John and Brian, sisters Kathleen (Maynard) McGill and Elizabeth (Robert) Blair, sister- in- law, Carol and great nephew, Jeremy Wall.
Through the years, Hazel was employed at the Sunrise Bakery, Lillian Fraser Memorial Hospital and Willow Lodge as a cook. In her younger years she was employed as a nannie for Georgina Munroe to care for her twin boys. Hazel also worked with her brother Carl for 7 years at the Malagash Co-op store as cashier. To her delight Hazel worked alongside Helen White at the Selrite Store in Tatamagouche for a brief time.
Hazel spent precious time with her friend Freda Langille, especially by the telephone. She also looked forward to outings with her cousin Elizabeth Canfield. She was a member of Sharon United Church and a member of the Onward UCW Unit of Barrachois for many years. Later she joined the UCW unit of Tatamagouche and Brule. The family would like to thank the staff at Willow Lodge for the excellent care for Hazel for 8 and ½ years.
Visitation on Friday, September 1st from 12:00pm until time of Funeral Service at 1:00pm both in Sharon United Church, Tatamagouche. Reverend Connie McNamara will be officiating. Reception to follow downstairs. Private interment in Lockerby Memorial Cemetery.
Donations may be made to Willow Lodge or Sharon United Church.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Coulter’s Funeral Home, Tatamagouche.
