Hattie O’Rourke
June 23, 1937
– May 25, 2024
It is with heavy
hearts that the O’Rourke family share the loss of Hattie
O’Rourke on Saturday, May 25, 2024, at the age of 86. She
passed away peacefully in the Valley Hospice following a brief
illness.
Hattie was born in
L’Ardoise, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, later moving to Halifax
where she grew up with her parents Ernest and Agnes (MacDonald) Pottie
and her nine brothers and sisters.
Hattie married her
husband, Harold O’Rourke, in June 1957, and they went on to
raise four children together. Hattie was a proud military wife
traveling to several locations across Canada before settling in
Kentville, Nova Scotia where she lived for the last 48 years. Along
with raising four children, Hattie had a 30-year career with Sears
Canada. After attending a live game in Toronto in 1996, Hattie became
an avid fan of the Toronto Blue Jays, never missing a game on
television. During the baseball off-season, she spent her time
watching curling. Hattie also held a big place in her heart for
animals, having numerous pets over the years.
Hattie is predeceased
by her parents; husband, Harold; eldest son, Kevin, as well as three
sisters, Gertie, Martha, and Loretta and four brothers, Angus, Edward,
Gerard, and Larry.
Hattie is survived by
her children, Brian (Lori) O’Rourke of Ottawa, ON; Darren
(Kathy) O’Rourke of Centreville, NS; Heather (Kevin) Crowell
of Centre Village, NB; and daughter in-law, Kim O’Rourke of
Petawawa, ON. She is also survived by grandchildren, Michael, Katelyn,
Kelly, Erin, Patrick, Ryan, and Kelsey as well as five
great-grandchildren and a sixth on the way. Hattie is also survived by
her sister, Agnes Wainman; brother, Hector (Joan) Pottie and several
nieces and nephews.
The family would like
to thank Dr. Saber and Dr. Hergett as well as the Palliative Care
team, all the doctors, nurses and volunteers at Valley Hospice, and
Hector and Joan Pottie for their help and care over the past few
months. We would also like to give a special thank you to one of
Hattie’s dearest friends, Krista Campbell, for everything
she has done over the years.
Cremation has taken
place. A funeral service will be held at St. Joseph’s Roman
Catholic Church in Kentville on Saturday June 8, 2024, at 10:00 a.m.
with a small reception to follow. Hattie will be laid to rest next to
her husband in Holy Cross Cemetery, Kentville. Donations, in lieu of
flowers, can be made to the Valley Hospice Foundation. Funeral
arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and
Cremation Services, Kentville.
