John Henry (Harry) Dodds
May 26, 1934 – August 5, 2023
Surrounded by sunshine and family, John Henry (Harry) Dodds peacefully left this world on August 5th, 2023. He was born on May 26, 1934, to Daisy and Harry Dodds in Regina, SK. He was the eldest of three children. His father was in the air force and the family moved from Regina to bases in Ottawa, ON and then MacDonald, MB before settling in Saskatoon at the end of WWII.
Left to cherish Harry’s memory, miss his smile, and celebrate his life are his children, Jacqueline (Trevor) Freysteinson, John Dodds and Murray Dodds; his grandchildren, Natasha (Sean) Bryden and Trey Freysteinson; his great-granddaughters, Emma and Andee Bryden; his sisters, Helen Ostertag and Joan (David) Plosz; his nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews. All of whom he loved dearly.
He was predeceased by his parents, Daisy and Harry Dodds; his grandson, Travis Freysteinson; and his brother-in-law, Joe Ostertag; and many dear friends.
Harry grew up as a west side boy. He enjoyed regaling his children with the antics of his youth. He attended high school at St. Peter’s College in Muenster where he excelled not only academically but also in every sport he took part in. Many lifelong friends were made here. He was a member of a barbershop quartet and participated in drama. He completed senior matriculation in Regina. One of his first jobs was delivering milk with a horse and wagon. He later went on to become an electrician. He was the electrical supervisor at the University of Saskatchewan until his retirement in 1993.
Harry loved the outdoors. He hiked the West Coast trail, traversed the Alaskan highways, and fished and canoed the Northern Saskatchewan waterways. He was an explorer and was comfortable pitching a tent anywhere. He was an avid cross-country skier and completed the Sask 60. In his retirement years he enjoyed trips to Hawaii and the United Kingdom with his sister Joan and family. He travelled to Mexico, Cuba and sailed on a Mediterranean cruise. And while not exotic, his weekly trips to his sister Helen’s for coffee were among his favorites.
Harry was involved in helping his children, grandchildren, and nephews in their school projects. He loved building and creating in his garage. He believed in doing things right the first time and as in all things, anything he built was made to last a lifetime. He could fix anything and was always available to lend a hand.
Harry was a dreamer and a solution finder. He was an artist. He was a lifelong learner. He was a man of his word and could always be counted on. Family was the most important thing to Harry. He was a young 89 years. Seldom, if ever, was he seen without a smile. Most times he would be whistling.
His was a life well-lived and well-loved.
