Obituary
In the early hours of Saturday, October 14, 2023, Harry lost his battle with complications due to an earlier injury.
He will be sadly missed by his wife, Pauline, of nearly 59 years, also his children: Laura (Norm) Richard of Swift Current, SK, Lyle (Kat) Helash of Riding Mountain, Darrell (Claudia) Helash of Gillam, and Matt Helash of Fork River, as well as grandchildren (Nathalie, Taylor, N’Danis, Nik, Colby, Kyle, Tabitha, Renee, Jorja, Natasha, Cooper, Grayson, and Harris, and great grandchildren Aspen, Archer, Deekan, Holden, Uhriya, Myla, Lyle, Ava, Hadrian,Trajan, and Orrion. Also mourning his loss are his siblings: Mary Bernatsky (Wpg), Gladys (Ed) Kavalec (Montreal), Peter (Selkirk), Olga McQueen (Sudbury), Sylvia (Ed) Harrison (Minnedosa), Donna Helash (Winnipegosis), in-laws: Paul (Karen) Osadchuk, Marion Jackson, as well as nieces and nephews and their families. Harry was predeceased by his parents Metro and Elizabeth, his brother John, and in-laws: Vic Bernatsky, Barb Helash, Murray McQueen, Peter and Norma Billay, Kay and Steve Sraybash, Florence and Walter Turko.
Harry was born in Fork River but lived in Dauphin, Lynn Lake, other parts of northern Manitoba and finally, Winnipegosis. His love was the farm and anything “Caterpillar” but his other loves were learning and playing several musical instruments (by ear), auction sales and his family: he especially loved to spoil the little ones with trips to the ice cream stand or candies and then the bigger ones with bigger toys to embark on a journey of tinkering and restoring anything with a motor. While in Lynn Lake, both Harry and Pauline enjoyed countless hours in their boat, on the many beautiful lakes and rivers of the north. They enjoyed hosting visitors, friends, family alike including grandchildren, for possibly one of their best fishing experiences. After retirement, he embarked on many hobbies including raising rabbits, growing mushrooms, and harvesting maple syrup. His favourite time was learning to play a violin, gifted to him by his sons for his 82nd birthday. We will remember him whenever we hear the accordion, harmonica or fiddle play. Rest in peace Dad. We will miss you dearly.
The family is hosting a Memorial Service at the Fork River Hall on Monday, October 23, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. Father Oleg Bodnarski and Ron Warkentin officiating. Internment at a later date.
