In loving memory of Harry David Janssen who passed away at Woodstock Hospital on March 21,2023.
He will be greatly missed by his wife, Margaret (Haggith) and his furbaby, Skip.
He was the son of Jack (2016) and Donna (2010) and dear brother of Mary (Peter), Jeff, Bob (Pam), Lil (Jo) and Shelley (Ted). He was a loved member of the Haggith family, Barb, and Alvin (2010), Sandra (Wayne), Wayne, Lynn (Paul), Fred (Mary Louise) and Teresa (Tom). He leaves behind many nieces and nephews.
Harry was born in Ingersoll in June 1963. His love of sports began early in his life. Along with his brother Bob, he participated for many years in the Can-Am Games and was a member of the Ingersoll Swim Team. Many hours were spent playing road hockey and honing his “breakaway” moves in the basement on Cherry St. Dreams of playing in the NHL never materialized but he loved his time in the Ingersoll Men’s League until injuries forced him to “hang up his skates”. Many weekends saw Harry and Bob heading off to Toronto to get tickets to a Maple Leafs game or a Blue Jays game.
Harry returned to school as a mature student. After getting his high-school diploma be trained to become a welder and was employed by Koch Mfg.
Harry met Maggie in October 1987 and he soon knew this was the girl he wanted to share his life with. They made it official and married on July 19, 1997. Maggie now was included in the “Sports Weekends” with trips to watch NASCAR racing. Talladega, Daytona, and Vegas.
Next came Harry’s passion for golf. Membership at the Mt. Elgin Golf Club with tee-off times at least 3 or 4 times a week! When his mobility limited his playing, he would join the group, riding along in the golf cart, pretending to be Maggie’s caddy.
When not busy with sports, Harry and Maggie enjoyed travelling. A Kon-Tiki Tour of Europe in the early days of courtship to Caribbean cruises with friends from Minnesota.
Harry inherited his love of gardening from his parents and he and Maggie have a lovely backyard oasis.
Harry valued family and was a loyal friend. He always made an effort to keep in touch. Harry was also the family “historian” and loved reminiscing on events from the past. At many get-togethers he had his listeners in tears, laughing at his animated storytelling…we will treasure those good times and they will live on in our memories.
Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will take place on Saturday, May 6th at Bob Janssen’s, 324095 Mt. Elgin Road, 2pm.
Donations in Harry’s memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada would be appreciated.
