It is with shock and profound sadness that the family announce the sudden passing on December 7, 2023 of Harold Thompson at the age of 76.
Harold was born on October 15, 1947 and raised in Duck Bay by his predeceased parents Raymond Thompson and Martha Nepinak, he was one of 8 siblings.
He began employment at the ripe age of 9 years old as a dock hand for fishing boats and that entailed a lot of heavy lifting and hard work over his young life. At the age of 21 he met the love of his life Annie in Good Harbor (boat docks and fish processing plant), while working with his father commercial fishing and Annie who also had been working with her family. Harold caught the eyes of a young Annie who she described as love at first sight! She approached him to request he sharpen her knife. Over several days and lots of knife sharpening, Her clever thought of playing a damsel in distress with a dull knife captured her forever partner. In 1972 the couple decided to marry and spent the next 52 years inseparable. In 1975 their first child was born and they had 2 more before deciding to move to Ontario for employment.
Over the span of their marriage they had moved to various towns. Ontario being the first big move, they spent roughly a year until they decided to move back to Manitoba to be closer to family. Dauphin became their home for the next 10 years and where they had their 4th child. After moving a few more times Harold and Annie decided to move to Winnipegosis to finish raising their family and purchased their first home making Winnipegosis their permanent residence.
Harold and Annie watched proudly as their children grew older and began building their own families, living independently and purchasing homes of their own. Harold and Annie now have 3 grandchildren they are extremely proud of and have enjoyed spending time with.
In 1998 Harold carried on the family tradition by beginning his commercial fishing career, which became his permanent source of income. He employed numerous family and friends over the years and finally decided to retire his nets the summer of 2023.
Harold was well known for his infectious smile, sense of humor and his laugh. He was a hard working man and kept everyone on their toes but still allowed time for silliness, pranks and laughter. With all these attributes Harold gained countless friendships over his lifetime that stayed for all his years.
In Harold’s downtime when he wasn’t fishing you would see him and Annie cruising the highways on their next visit with family and friends, whether it was a special occasion, grab a quick coffee, sit to play a game of cards or attend bingo. It was a very rare occurrence to see Harold and Annie apart. In many eyes over the duration of their marriage, people often stated their marriage reminded those of Raymond and Martha.
Harold will be greatly missed by his loving wife Annie Thompson and his children, Melanie, Mary (Oliver), Jim (Noelle), Gilbert (Loretta), grandchildren, Alexandra, James and Savannah, his surviving brothers, who he had such strong bonds with, Gilbert (Slim) and Melvin (Punky), and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Harold goes to be with his late father Raymond Thompson, mother Martha Nepinak, late brothers, Gerald, Wallace (Porky), Larry, late sister Marilyn and numerous nephews and nieces.
Public Viewing will be offered from 1:00 -3:00 pm on Saturday, December 16, 2023 from Sneath-Strilchuk Family Care Centre in Dauphin, MB, followed by a funeral service at 3:00 pm with Fr. Michel Nault officiating.
Should friends so desire, donations in memory of Harold may be made to Heart & Stroke Foundation of Manitoba.
The funeral service will be live streamed for those who cannot attend.
