RAWN – Harold Leslie was a strong, knowledgeable, and very hardworking man throughout his entire life. While all these things are unquestionably true, the people who knew him well would likely describe him as an exceptionally clever, caring, honest, and dependable person, who was a master of “puns”, and someone who was always willing to lend a hand. Most importantly, he was an incredible husband, father, grandfather, and friend.
Harold was born in Port Arthur, ON on October 8, 1938 to Beatrice and Lloyd Rawn. He lived in the wilderness of Quetico Provincial Park for the first 8 years of his life where his mother raised and homeschooled him, and his father worked as the park superintendent. In 1947, his father arranged for a job transfer to Fort Frances, ON where Harold graduated from Grade 13 in 1957. Then in 1961, he graduated from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering. Harold began teaching at Espanola High School in September of 1961 spending the next few summers obtaining his Master’s Degree in Education. He taught Mathematics and Science for 34 years until his retirement in 1995. Harold was an extraordinarily patient and devoted teacher who was respected by students and staff alike.
On August 25, 1962, Harold married his love and best friend, Myrna. They welcomed their son Kevin Bruce on November 3, 1964, and their daughter Joni Beatrice on January 9, 1970.
Together, Harold and Myrna spent many years building, maintaining, and enjoying their camp on Manitoulin Island, where they regularly welcomed family and friends for saunas, horseshoe games, fish fries, and island tours.
Harold loved the outdoors. In the winter, he enjoyed cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and curling. He loved to hunt partridge in the fall and cut wood to warm the house through the winter. He spent hours at camp fishing for bass during the summer; an activity that he enjoyed from a very young age. He passed his love of fishing on to his family. For years, he and his family travelled west to Bad Vermillion Lake to the family “cabin” to visit relatives and friends. Fishing for pickerel and playing card games of “Smear” were just some of the highlights.
Harold and Myrna enjoyed many years of world travel with friends. Harold’s last count was 35 destinations, with his final trip to South Africa in 2017.
Woodworking was a hobby of Harold’s. He crafted several pieces of furniture for his family and loved building special requests for his grandchildren – from Muskoka chairs and toy boxes, to picnic tables and tree-houses.
Harold loved spending time with his grandchildren, from their birth to their young adult years. He passed on his knowledge and wisdom and shared stories from his upbringing – including catching fish on a pin, and making ice cream when the honey-comb ice on the lake was just right.
If anyone ever needed help with anything, Harold was always there to lend a helping hand, whether it was moving a piano, shingling a roof, or constructing a building of any type. He was talented in so many ways, with the exception of dancing.
Harold will be lovingly missed and fondly remembered by his wife Myrna, son Kevin (Jessie), daughter Joni (Peter), and grandchildren, Bennett, Carley, Skye, and Maesie, along with extended family and an incredible circle of friends.
Special thanks to the kind, caring, and hardworking staff in the Acute Care Unit of the Espanola Hospital and for the arrangements made by Bourcier Funeral Home Ltd.
If you so choose, donations to a charity of your choice in memory of Harold would be gratefully received. Please raise your next glass (preferably rum) in honour of our husband, father, grandfather, and friend, who indeed was “the life of the party”. Arrangements by BOURCIER FUNERAL HOME Ltd, Espanola.
