It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Harold Irwin on May 5, 2024, at the age of 76. Harold passed away at Grace Hospital, the very place where his journey began on February 12, 1948, to loving parents Clifford and Irene Irwin. A valiant fighter, Harold bravely battled heart disease, kidney disease, and diabetes until his final days.
Harold is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Linda Irwin, and their cherished sons, Cory (and wife Laura) and Scott. He was a proud grandfather to Kennedy and Declan, who brought immense joy and love into his life. Harold will also be dearly missed by his special nieces, Leann Oakley and Sharilyn Knox (Kevin), along with his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Mae and Don Finley.
Born in Winnipeg, Harold’s life was marked by frequent moves due to his father’s profession as a grain buyer. His earliest years were spent in Haywood, and later, Shoal Lake, where he completed his high school education. Harold began his career at Manitoba Hydro in 1967 but soon moved on to explore different paths. Harold married Linda, on October 12, 1968. To be closer to home, he embarked on numerous business ventures including working for the Hamiota IGA, where he learned the meat cutting business. Over time he became and working in various communities which included Hamiota, Shoal Lake, Brandon, Kenton and Boissevain. Later owning and operating Irwin’s Drive Inn from 1976 to 1979 and again starting in 1988, which he sold in 2012.
Known affectionately as “Happy Harold,” he was active in the Hamiota community, engaging in various businesses and catering services for events like Ducks Unlimited Banquets, weddings, and reunions. Harold also served as a school bus driver for the Birdtail River School Division for 18 years.
Harold’s passion extended beyond his professional life. A die-hard sports fan, Harold cherished watching live sports events and had an avid interest in sports collectibles. His hobbies included buying and trading vehicles, going on family vacations, and enjoying time with family and friends.
In retirement, Harold and Linda moved to manage facilities for Holiday Retirement, enriching the lives of many seniors across cities like Saskatoon, Regina, Brandon, and Winnipeg. After retiring in 2012 alongside his wife Linda, Harold dedicated his later years to family, particularly his grandchildren, Kennedy and Declan, settling in Winnipeg to be close to them.
As we remember Harold, we celebrate a life well-lived, full of laughter, love, and lasting memories. His presence will forever be missed, but his spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
A celebration of Harold’s life will be held at a later date.
