With broken hearts we sadly announce the passing of a special man, our father, and husband, Wayne Hayes on October 1, 2023.
Wayne was born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia. After finishing high school, he left Cape Breton to pursue job opportunities in Los Angeles, joining his aunt and uncle who were already living there and becoming a fun “big brother” to his 3 cousins. When the family decided to move to Williams Lake, BC, Wayne moved with them and started driving haul trucks at the local mine. Wayne never missed an opportunity to return home to visit his family in Nova Scotia and always treasured the time he spent there.
After obtaining his forest technology diploma from CNC in Prince George, he joined the BC Forest Service in 1980 as a forest technician in 100 Mile House. It was there he met his future bride, Wendy. While working in various departments, and spending summers forest fire fighting the opportunity to work with his good friend, Don Wright in Forest Health was the highlight of his career.
Kidney disease struck Wayne in 1993 but with an experimental trial with cortisone treatments at UBC kept his kidneys both working at half capacity till 2004 when both failed and declining health issues forced an early retirement. Wayne loved working in the woods and was able to continue working as a private contractor for a few more years. Teaming up with Mel Dodge, another good friend for this contract work, was special to him. As Wayne’s health continued to decline the family moved to Kamloops, BC in 2011. In 2013 the family’s dreams came true and Wayne “won the lottery” by receiving a kidney transplant.
Wayne enjoyed the company of good friends, a quiet lake to fish on, downhill and cross country skiing, playing hockey his entire life, and later volunteering for the local Jr. A hockey team in Kamloops “Go Blazers” and being that special breed of dad to his daughters that encouraged them to follow every dream and volunteered any way he could. The ultimate “4H and Horse show” dad.
Wayne is predeceased by his parents Howard, and Millie Hayes, and his brothers Doug, and Kent Hayes.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 37 years, Wendy, his daughters Kelsey (Eric), and Zaria (Todd). The family is small, but he has special people in Nova Scotia- sister-in-law Barb, niece Amanda (Sean), Emma, Ryan, nephew Kent (Emir) as well as his cousins Gary, Corey, and Sheree.
The spreading of Wayne’s ashes will be done in 2024 as per his wishes at 2 of his favorite places- the beaches of Oregon, Glace Bay, and Nova Scotia. No service by request.
The family is grateful for the support of the Kidney Clinic team at Royal Inland Hospital and especially his doctors: Dr. J. Connelly, and Dr. M. Hollman. The family is appreciative of the support of the Kidney Foundation of Canada. Please consider transplant donation, it truly is the gift of life.
