Loved and missed by his wife of nearly 70-years, Anne-Marie; his three children, Harald (Diane), Claudia (Peter), and Monica (Mark); six grandchildren, Matthew (Kelli), Eric (Isabelle), Christopher (Rayna), Derek (Olivia), Philip, and Rory (Amelia), and seven great-grandchildren.
A Son’s Tribute to his Father
I know your early life was difficult and you came of age in a time and place where your future seemed bleak. You carried the sadness of losing your father and oldest brother when you were a young man mostly in silence. Only as an adult did I recognize that sadness when you spoke of them.
I admired the courage it took to leave your family and homeland for a new country with a new language. But you were determined to build a better life when you, as a proud journeyman tool and die maker, immigrated to Canada in the early 1950s.
When you married mom (1954) and started your family the following year, you had taken a big step to that better life. In the following years, your family grew and by 1962 it was complete at five.
I saw your devotion to mom and family and watched you work hard to support us. You also took time to relax and have fun. We spent many summers as a family camping and at the beach.
I saw your creativity at work and at home. Watching you I learned the skills and pleasure of creating things using your hands.
You loved to tell stories! Often, it was more entertaining watching you, laughing so hard that you couldn’t finish the story. It was infectious.
I saw how you loved children and had a special ability to relate to them. Your grandchildren benefited greatly from your creativity and skills, making them many wooden toys, everything from airplanes to medieval swords.
I saw how you loved nature, feeding the birds, making birdhouses and bird feeders, and feeding the chipmunks that seemed to be permanent residents of your backyard.
Travelling with you to Germany in 1994, I saw you reconnect with your brother and reminisce about your childhoods. It was obvious that you shared a bond that neither time nor distance had broken.
I know the last few years were difficult for you and I truly wish I could have helped you from spending so much time in silence. I really missed having our lively discussions.
Thank you for all you taught me. I’m proud to be your son.
