Passed peacefully in his home on September 14th, 2024. Loved dearly by his children: Steven (Victoria), Tania, Danielle “Danny” (Mark) and his grandchildren Sabrina, Erik, Sebastian, Helena, Justin, Brayden, Olivia, Randi-Lynn, Angelique. Adoring big brother of Marion (Olaf) in Germany. Predeceased by his parents Heinrich and Lotti.
Born in Eastern Germany at the start of WW2, Gunti discovered his love for soccer, earning his position in a German Football club, but never making it to his favourite team, St. Pauli. He was proud of his time in the German Merchant Navy, and loved to tell stories of his antics.
Guenter moved to Canada to provide a better life for his family, working as a skilled tradesman before retiring from Unilever in 1999. As a family man, he coached youth soccer to give back to the community. He loved life, using humour to connect with people, ensuring everyone who met Gunti remembered him. Dad loved music. German music was usually playing somewhere in the house, louder at Christmas, giving his kids fond memories of “Johnny McRoy”.
Guenter could fix anything, often breaking something in the process which he always laughed off before fixing it, whether it be electronics, home repairs, or cars. He cherished his model train and stamp collections, keeping meticulous care of both. Gunti enjoyed playing cribbage with his kids, whether they cheated together on him or he double skunked them. Dad never lost his love for watching Bundesliga matches and was happy to see Canada make it to the 2024 Fifa World Cup. He often shouted encouragement or bad calls from his Lazyboy. Gunti always let his children know how proud he was of them and was always there to help, there wasn’t anything he wouldn’t do for his kids.
We would like to give a shout out to the Lakeridge Health Oshawa G6 team for taking care of dad earlier this year and his PSW Layton, who provided outstanding care when Gunti needed it the most at home.
Prost to you Daddio, Dad, Opa, Gunti-Baby! You will be forever missed by those of us fortunate to have felt your love and shared your laughter. Love you always Dad, thank you for being OUR Dad.
