Grant Milling Skene age 94, of Penticton BC died, Sunday morning, 19 Feb 2023. In hospital, with family at his side, and Penticton Regional Hospital staff keeping him comfortable, when he could no longer fight a surprising infection following minor surgery, he slipped gently and peacefully from us.
Grant was born to Oliver Ellesworth and Eyleen Alanah (Milling) Skene. He is deeply mourned by his wife of 70+ years, Freda May (Matters), and their four children, Karen, Gail, Pam, and Doug (& Piera). Grandchildren Kelly, Nicole, Jordon and Kim, great-grandchildren Kiely, Cailin, Miles and Austin, great-great grandson Banks, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins across Canada will miss Grant.
Grant grew up in many parts of west and central Canada. Joining the RCAF at 18, he continued moving, and made sure his family had annual vacations in different parts of Canada. But when he was at home, when not at work fixing airplanes, or singing in varied choirs, Grant “tinkered” with cars (his own and/or the neighbours’), or their dryers, toasters, patio doors… Or he was making wine or brewing beer (until the beer explosion one day).
While Grant usually won trivia games, and virtually beat Jeopardy contestants, he was always questing after knowledge. He normally had a couple of books on the go – one full of facts and figures, the other a good adventure.
Visitation at the Providence Funeral Home, Penticton on Thursday 23 February at 2 pm; Funeral service will be held at St Saviour’s Anglican Church in Penticton on Friday 24 February 2023 at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to a choir of your choice, perhaps a Choral Society, or a church choir, or a school choir. Music (and singing) was a renewing and refreshing love of Grant’s, important to him from his youngest years, right through his final night.
