Grant Milton Bainbridge age 93 of Comox, BC died peacefully December 27, 2023.
Grant was born October 18, 1930, in the small town of Emo, Ontario, to James Edgar and Leta Florence (Card). Raised with his sister, Ora and brother, Don. As a child in winter, he crossed the ice of the Rainy River to the American side buy their superior candy, dodging the authorities.
As a teenager, Grant moved to the neighbouring town of Fort Frances to continue high school with plans to attend university for Geology. He graduated from the University of Manitoba with a bachelor’s degree in science in 1953. He worked as a Geologist in various mines in Northern Ontario and settled in Elliot Lake. It was there in 1958 that he met Gena. They were the first couple to be married in the United Church of Elliot Lake April 18, 1959. The young couple lived on the mine site and welcomed sons, Gordon in 1961 and Gary in 1962.
Grant had done a lot of travelling with his parents as a teen and soon the travel bug bit him again. After researching their options, the young family made the monumental move to Tasmania, Australia and then on to Perth. At the end of 1972 after 9 years in Australia it was time to move home to Canada with many memories and a daughter, Gillian born in 1969 that completed their family.
Upon returning to Canada the family settled on Vancouver Island, first Nanaimo then Courtenay. Here Grant spent 18 years working for the Liquor Board in Campbell River. Grant volunteered with his church, service clubs, political parties and whatever else Gena signed him up for. He was never happier than when he was driving a VW van!
Grant is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Gena, his sons Gordon (Denise), Gary (Janice) and daughter Gillian (Marc). The 5 G’s! Grandchildren, Jessica, Alex, Devon, James, Scott, Greg, Colin, Aidan and Jocelyn. Great-grandchildren, Oliver, Nova, Henry and Hattie. Also survived by his brother Donald and many nieces and nephews.
Grant is predeceased by his parents Edgar and Leta, sister Ora, an infant brother, and son-in-law Dan.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Northgate Foursquare Church on January 20th, 2024, at 2 PM.
