Grant Maclean Robertson died on October 9, 2023, at the age of 93. After a long life, lived well, he succumbed to aggressive prostate cancer a week after being diagnosed.
Grant was born on June 25, 1930 in Haliburton Ontario, the youngest sibling of Boyd and Lois born to Mossum and Irene Robertson. The experience of growing up in a small northern Ontario community through the Great Depression and Second World War left an indelible imprint on his outlook on life; he was fiscally disciplined but extremely generous with non-frivolous gifts. Active as a youth, he particularly enjoyed playing hockey for the Haliburton Huskies. There is a rumour that he even tried out for the Scottish National Hockey team at one point. A member of the first class to graduate grade 13 in Haliburton, Grant began his career as a teacher, which he did not enjoy, and at the age of 25 left Haliburton for the University of Toronto to study architecture. He supported himself through his studies by picking tobacco during the summer, working as a parking attendant, and dressing up as Mr. Peanut for advertising at events. He was part of the Hart House fraternity and spoke highly of the education he received. His experience made him a strong believer in education as an investment, and to this end he contributed generously to the education of his children and grandchildren.
After graduation, Grant and two university friends set off for Europe by boat. It was there on the ‘Arcadia’ the woman he would marry, Brigitte Muller, had a deck chair next to his. Over a very brief time he was able to charm Brigitte, who after a year of working in Canada and adamant never to return, to leave her home in Germany. After a brief time in Toronto they moved to St. John, New Brunswick where Grant worked as an architect and their son Gregory and daughter Danica were born. Their youngest son, Jeffery, was born when they moved back to Toronto before they settled in Cobourg where they have lived for over 50 years.
Grant enjoyed many independent activities and hobbies. He was a voracious reader and, up until the pandemic, a regular attendee at the public library. He had most of their large back yard converted to a garden and for decades grew the majority of fresh fruit and vegetables for the family during the growing season. He was also notorious for making his own wine and subjected anyone who would join him to a tasting. After a busy and successful career running his own architectural practice he re-discovered exercise and would regularly workout at the local ‘Y’ into his late 80’s. Staying fit and investing wisely enabled him to travel extensively in his retirement and explore all the major continents and wonders of the world.
A man who expressed himself better through action than words, Grant was a strong believer in the importance of family and always enjoyed gatherings with them.
Grant was a modest man who led a very good life. He leaves behind his wife, Brigitte, children, Gregory (Jayne), Danica (Robert) and Jeffrey (Myra) and his grandchildren, Jezel, Joshua, Haylee, Bryan, JB, Lachlan, Lauren, Nadira and Darren.
There will be a celebration of life in the spring of 2024.
