Obituary of Gordon McKenzie VanWart
It is with heavy hearts that the family of Gordon McKenzie VanWart, husband of Shirley (Clark) VanWart, announces his passing which occurred on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Gordon was born on December 29, 1935, in Guelph, Ontario, and was the son of the late Walter and Esther (Baker) VanWart.
When Gordon was four years old his family moved from Ontario to New Brunswick, where Gordon remained for the remainder of his years. As a young boy, he loved nothing more than spending time riding his bike with friends and attending meetings with his Scout Troop. Gordon and Shirley fell in love and were married for 62 years. Gordon worked for NBTel for 34 years before retiring to enjoy time with his family. Gordon was a proud father and grandfather, and his family always came first.
He enjoyed being outdoors and over the years enjoyed canoeing, fishing, cross-country skiing and was an avid gardener. Many people would comment on how beautiful his flower gardens were. He was very creative and enjoyed photography, woodworking and music. He was a member of Kennebecasis Baptist Church and really enjoyed his time volunteering on various committees and helping with the student Kraft Dinner lunch program.
Gordon is survived by his loving wife, Shirley; his son, James (Wendy) VanWart; daughters, Kimberley VanWart (the late Christopher McMackin) and Tracy VanWart; grandchildren, Brianna (Cory) Peters and Devin (Rhys) VanWart; step-grandchildren, Anna and Hope; several in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends.
Gordon’s family would like to thank the staff of the Emergency, Internal Medicine and the Palliative Care departments at the Saint John Regional Hospital for the compassion and kindness that was shown to Gordon and family during his stay there.
Arrangements are under the care of Kennebecasis Funeral Home, 152 Pettingill Rd. (506-849-2119). In keeping with Gordon’s wishes, a private graveside service will be held at a later date in Fernhill Cemetery. For those who wish, donations to the Canadian Diabetes Association would be appreciated by the family.
