Remembering Gordon
Gordon Hillier, 97, passed away December 6, 2023 in Willow Lodge, Tatamagouche and is now in Heaven with Muriel. Born in Pictou on June 3, 1926, and moved to Bayhead around 1932 where he spent most of his growing up years.
Gordon worked in sawmills and on the railroad before starting as a truck driver/delivery person for the Tatamagouche Creamery in 1954 where he later became chief butter-maker. In 1971 he became a valued employee with CG Fulton Pharmacy for 21 years. Gordon worked tirelessly to support his family, holding part time positions such as Janitor at Bank of Nova Scotia, Night Person/Janitor for Lillian Fraser Memorial Hospital, evenings and weekends as well as haymaking at Ferguson farm in the summer.
He was a member of Sedgwick Memorial Presbyterian Church for many years, where he served as an Elder, Sunday School Teacher & Sunday School Superintendent. As well as other committees within the church, throughout the years.
He was a long-time member of the Tatamagouche Fire Dept., member of the Tatamagouche Legion Branch 64 for 75 years, served as School Board Trustee as well as Board Member of the North Shore Recreation Centre.
Gordon became an avid golfer in his fifties, first at Pugwash and then a long- time member of the Sunrise Beach Golf Club in Brule. Finally putting the clubs in the bag one last time at age 92.
He loved walking, collecting (first license plates of Nova Scotia and then golf score cards from around the world) golfing, (with anyone who wanted to play), but mostly with his buddy’s Ken and Brian, cribbage playing and coffee with “his” girls from the Insurance office.
Gordon is survived by his son Rick (Sandra), Charlottetown, PEI; grandsons, Ian Hillier, Charlottetown, PEI, Ryan Hillier, Riverview, N.B.; great-grandsons; Lachlan, Patrick and Elliot; sister-in-law, Phyllis Sutherland, nieces and nephews.
Gordon was predeceased by his wife Muriel (Cole) Hillier; great granddaughter, Leni Hillier; stepbrother, Fred Spinney; brother-in-law, Willis Cole and his wife Anne; brother-in-Law, Ernest Cole and his wife Elsie; his mother Violet Maude Hillier and his Stepfather Willaim Spinney and his mother-in-law, Margaret Cole.
Gordon is resting in Coulter’s Funeral Home, 48 Riverside Dr., Tatamagouche from where visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 12 from 4-6pm commencing with a Legion Tribute Service at 3:45pm. Funeral Service will take place Wednesday, December 13 at 2pm from the funeral home chapel with Rev. Dr. Glen Matheson officiating. Reception will follow. Interment in Lockerby Memorial Cemetery.
