Gloria Taylor Obituary
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Gloria Jean Taylor (née Sauer). Gloria passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on the afternoon of September 11, 2024 in Penticton, B.C. at the age of 77.
She will be dearly missed by her husband, Jim Taylor, and her children Sara Goel (Nik) (Liam and Emma) and David Haggett (Sharla) (Aubrey and Hudson) as well as Jim’s children Doug Taylor (Magda) and Deb Taylor (Craig Milton) along with extended family. She is survived by her brothers, Lyle Sauer (Carol Grainger), Garry Sauer (Moe) and her sister Kathy Sauer, as well as many nephews and nieces and their children. She is predeceased by her parents, Richard and Sadie Sauer and her sister, Linda Sauer.
Born and raised in Regina, Saskatchewan, Gloria was the oldest of five children. In 1975 she graduated from the University of Regina with a Masters in Psychology. Her career as a psychologist took a pause when she moved to Nipawin, Sask. with her first husband (John Haggett) to raise their two children, Sara and David. In Nipawin, she took a position with Sask. Mental Health where she worked until 2007 and made special friendships with co-workers which lasted her lifetime.
Gloria was involved in and supported many local groups and organizations in Nipawin through the years, including the United Church, St. John’s Anglican Church, the Youth and Music Association, and the local art, badminton, curling and swim clubs. In swimming, she found a passion for coaching which she shared with her husband, Jim Taylor. Gloria and Jim married in 1991 and together they coached the Nipawin Lions Swim Club for many years, across four decades.
Together, Gloria and Jim developed and established the resort of Scot’s Landing on the North Saskatchewan River near Nipawin. They eventually sold the cabin business and in 2020 relocated to Summerland, B.C. Gloria and Jim enjoyed traveling but mostly being snowbirds in Mazatlan, Mexico for many years. Gloria enjoyed learning Spanish and made meaningful friendships there.
She had many talents, hobbies and interests. She enjoyed sports and was active with swimming, badminton, cross-country skiing and curling. Gloria was known as a good skip, but an even better bonspieler. She was very artistic and enjoyed creating art in many forms including weaving, sewing, knitting, quilting, soap-making and pottery. In her later years she became a skilled and dedicated painter. Gloria was also a talented musician, being self-taught on piano, guitar and violin.
Gloria was known for good conversation, full of intelligence and humour. She was a generous and fun-loving spirit. Most of all, Gloria was a dedicated wife and mother and an incredibly loving grandmother. She will be fondly remembered by all her family and those that knew her.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. (www.cancer.ca/en/)
