The family of Gloria (“Glo”) Isabel McNeill (nee Needler) born June 21, 1929, of Lunenburg, announce her peaceful passing on Wednesday May 15, 2024, at home, surrounded by family.
Born in the same house, in the same room and in the same bed as was her late mother, Glo was born in Manchester, England, the daughter of the late Thomas Antony and Beatrice Rebecca (Hartfield) Needler.
At an early age in England, she studied piano, dance and voice and later studied Illustration and Design at Art College, and Foreign Correspondence at Manchester Business College.
She lived through WWII and had many stories of the blitz and growing up a teenager in the days of blackout and rationing. She came to Canada in 1953 where she met her future husband, Gerald (“Jerry”) Charles McNeill married in 1959.
She was a performer in both England and Canada, being nominated for the Dominion Drama Festival best actress award. She taught Art and English in Canada, and her paintings, including many portraits, which were exhibited and sold in Canada and the USA. Her largest mural was at the Toronto new Music Library (which is now a Korean consulate).
She fought fiercely against injustice, wherever she found it. In the 1950s she was one of the early members of Voice of Women, the organization which tackled the existing inequalities in treatment of women.
She was a feature writer for several newspapers and trade publications and had columns in The Toronto Telegraph and Globe and Mail. She also produced political cartoons for The Brantford Expositor.
She was as a Judge for several years for The Dairy Bureau of Canada, the Canadian National Exhibition and numerous local Fairs, following up her observations by creating industry standards and performance manuals.
Many Lunenburgers remember her from her volunteer work at Fisherman’s Memorial hospital, for the Heritage Society, where she ran the Bandstand concerts for many years, and Lunenburg Art Gallery, and her win of the Provincial Cribbage Championship for the RCL. Drawing on her performance training, she became nationally famous when she won the largest prize in Canadian television history for the Recipe to Riches competition, making her famous Luscious Lemon Pudding one of the best-selling desserts of all time for the Loblaw’s chain.
Glo is survived by her dearest cousin Howard (Willa) Needler New Haven, CT; son Andrew (Gail) Paradise, NL; her daughters, Katherine (“KT”) (Dale Roberts) and Fiona (Basil Campbell), both of Lunenburg; grandchildren Victoria (Adam), Rebecca (Robert), Elizabeth (Ryan), Alexander (“Alex”), David, Carolyn (Marc), Emily (Adam); great grandchildren Katelynn, Sarah, James and Isabella, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she is predeceased by her husband, Jerry, and brothers Martin and Geoffrey.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213, Hwy #3, Lunenburg. A private family graveside interment service will be held in Hillcrest Cemetery, Lunenburg. The family invites members of the local community to drop in to Glo’s place to share memories on Tuesday May 21st, between 3pm to 7pm. BYOB. A remote option will be provided for those unable to travel (contact Fiona for the link).»
