GLENWOOD BRUCE CLIFFORD – We are saddened to announce that Bruce passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 31, 2023, early in the morning at the George Derby Centre in Burnaby, BC. He was the eldest child of Lester and Grace Clifford and was born in Selkirk, Manitoba on February 3, 1936. He was 86 years of age. Bruce spent his school years living with his family in Petersfield, Manitoba.
Bruce had the ability to play multiple musical instruments and had a keen ear to play a tune just upon hearing the music. In his late teenage years, he was the fiddler in a local Band which earned him the opportunity to record a record. In addition to his musical abilities, he frequently helped his father as a carpenter.
Although Bruce was a talented musician and carpenter, he had a desire to become a pilot and enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) before his 21st birthday. During his service within the RCAF he was a First Officer within the 428 AWF Ghost Squadron. While he was in the Airforce, he met his lifelong soulmate Irene Nicholls and in August 1958, they married and the two of them were together until she passed in April 2016.
Bruce served his country until November 1962 and lived in several bases across Canada while raising two children. In 1966, he moved the family to Dorian, Quebec where Bruce began his career as a pilot with Air Canada. Eventually moving the family to Ontario and after a few years they moved to British Columbia as Bruce was based out of Vancouver. Bruce’s third child a daughter was born in the mid 70’s and when he elected to retire from Air Canada in the late 70’s he flew 747’s with the primary routes being overseas flights.
After early retirement from Air Canada Bruce continued to expand his knowledge with many new endeavours. He was always looking for a new opportunity regardless if it was a new business, trading commodities or being a rancher. As well, his love for animals enabled him to own racehorses. After many years living on the BC Coast he moved to the BC Interior where he finally settled with his wife in Kamloops for a number of years to be close to his youngest daughter and her family. Then in June 2020, Bruce moved back to the coast to be close to his eldest children and their families making George Derby Centre his new residence until his passing.
Bruce always was enthusiastic to learn new skills and especially loved reading, playing his violin and many other musical instruments, dancing, watching global events and westerns.
Mourning are his children Zelda (David), Clark (Donna) and Heather together with his 1 grandson Matthew (Shilo), and 3 granddaughters Kerri (Mike), Cayla and Camryn and 6 great-grandchildren, Grei, Liv, Rye and Reine (children of Kerri & Mike) and Benjamin and Sloan (children of Matthew & Shilo). Bruce is also survived by his sisters, Eileen and Deanna and his brothers Brian, Gene and Ron and their families.
Special thanks to the caregivers at George Derby Centre and for the great care, comfort and love given to Bruce.
Bruce wished for no memorial service to be held and will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife Irene at Heritage Gardens Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Bruce’s Care Home – George Derby Centre as he was a Veteran.
The journey continues….
