In the afternoon of October 2nd, 2023, a beautiful fall day, Gladys (Peggy) Cross passed away in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario at Niagara Long Term Care Residence at the age of 96. Devoted wife of the late Colin Cross (September 28, 2006), beloved mother of Sheila (Mark) Bazeley and Michael (Heather) Cross, she was cherished by seven grandchildren, Stephanie (Adam), Adam (Fran), Jeremy (Tara), Robin (Bill), Laura (Brandon), Melody (Peter) and Leslie (Bob). Peggy also had fourteen great-grandchildren, Myriah, Rhys, Brielle, Elise, Rhea, Paige, Ruby, Braxton, Wesley, Aven, Ace, Mila, Tristan and Finnegan. She is survived by her sister-in-law Margaret Cross as well as a number of nieces, nephews and cousins in England.
Mom spent the years of WWII in England and developed a life-long aversion to violence and hatred. She made a personal vow in her early years to be a positive, pleasant and supporting influence on everyone she met. Also, resulting from those years was a stint in the Women’s Royal Naval Services (the WRENS) through which she met her husband Colin. Another interesting aspect to her service was a learned skill to identify planes flying over both wartime and post wartime Britain. From the wartime she carried with her a reluctance to waste anything and raised her family in the spirit of true appreciation of the things God provides and deepest affection for the hands blessed with preparing it.
Mom made many friends since coming to Canada in 1957, and will be especially missed by Irene and Betty. She worked at Food City bakery and regularly swam at the McBain Centre pool. In younger years she travelled and volunteered in various organizations. Peggy loved singing, going for walks, making ‘welsh cakes’, and trifle. She always had a pot of soup on the go. Peggy was an avid reader, enjoyed word games and playing Scrabble with friends.
