Gladys Darling Obituary
Gladys Darling passed away peacefully at the Baldur Manor on Monday, January 15th 2024 at the age of 97.
Gladys was born on the family farm near Neelin Manitoba, the daughter of John and Ellen Mabon. She grew up there with her siblings Lorne, Ivan, Eleanor and Morley. She attended Huntley and Neelin schools, received her teaching permit and taught at Camille school near Holland Manitoba for one year.
She married Calvin Darling, son of Garnet and May Darling on July 22, 1950 and started life together on his family farm where they raised four children, keeping busy with the land and cattle.
She loved working in the garden and was a wonderful cook. We always enjoyed her baking; in particular her butter tarts and pies. She was an excellent seamstress and made many clothes for herself and her children. Knitting, needlepoint and crocheting were a few of her other hobbies and took pride in the many quilts and blankets she made for her children and grandchildren.
One of her greatest prides was in her family and her greatest happiness was when they all came to visit. There were many happy times together on the farm and in Baldur. She really loved their company, their enjoyment of the farm and being with their cousins.
Gladys worked at the Baldur Manor for ten years as a health care aide and retired in 1990. Calvin and Gladys moved to Baldur in 1989. They spent many years enjoying their house and yard, visits with family and friends and community activities.
She was active in the Neelin and the Baldur United Churches, a member of the auxiliary and was also a member of the Red Hat Society.
Gladys and Calvin had many travels in their retirement years, including bus tours through the US and Hawaii, journeying to Mexico and many places across Canada.
Calvin passed away in 2014 and her son Dennis in 2020. She was also predeceased by her parents John & Ellen Mabon, brothers Lorne and Ivan and sister Eleanor, sisters-in-law Lil & Lynne Mabon, mother and father in-law Garnet & May Darling as well as brothers-in-law Jack (Lenore) and Bill (Helen).
She is survived by her children Sandra (Bernie) Davidowich, Elizabeth Manning, Brian Darling and daughters-in-law Rhonda and Kathy Darling; grandchildren Trevor, Ryan (Yolanda), Eric (Oksana), Tim (Denise), Amy (Chris), Kevin (Brittany), Megan (Melissa), Arel (Doug), Ashley (Jake) and Kristy (Albert); great grandchildren Alyssa, Caitlin, Ryleigh, Theron, Quinn, Sawyer, Bowen, Hannah & Jacob and by brother Morley Mabon as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A Graveside Service will be held at the Baldur Cemetery on Friday, July 19, 2024 at 11:00 am with Sharon Hamilton officiating. Following the interment, a reception will be held at the Baldur Memorial Hall. Everyone is welcome.
