There are some people who always live life with a positive outlook and unending enthusiasm – and Gillian Crawford Fleming was just such a person. She came to the end of her remarkable 96 years on Saturday, March 23rd , peacefully and surrounded by those she loved.
Loving wife to John Sandford Fleming (1927-2018) and mother to Jock (Sue), Jamie (Liz) and Jeremy (Irene). Gill was a big favourite with her grandchildren, John (Agatha), Rob and George (Kara); Joel (Meg) and Jay (Teresa); and Cole, Grant and Hilary. She was delighted by her two great grandchildren, Knox and Margot. Sister to Joanna (now 100 years young), and John (deceased) and Jenny (deceased).
Gill had an enormous capacity for joy and her world was viewed through the rosiest of glasses. She loved visits with family and friends and thought there was nothing better than a good chat and a cup of tea, perhaps while patting a golden retriever or two – or in more recent years, her cat Tommy. She was a prolific reader and loved to engage in lively discussions about whatever was in the news – no one had a keener grip on the political doings of the day than Gill.
Raised in Toronto and at Kinkyle, the family farm near King City, Gill was educated at Havergal College, where she was a “Stone Ager” (one who graduated long ago) and a “Marguerite” (one who attended from Kindergarten through Grade 13). While at Kinkyle, she began her enduring love of golden retrievers and enjoyed lots of time riding her horses. She entered the University of Toronto at the age of just 16 and graduated with a degree in Occupational Therapy. Not long after, she married her childhood sweetheart Johnny Fleming. Early in their married life, they bought a cottage on Morris Island in Lake Muskoka. Though she worked at dozens of jobs – some paid and some volunteer – she always made sure nothing interfered with being able to spend the entire summer on the island with her family. In recent years, her Morris Island time was considerably less, but she loved it just as much. Gill loved nothing more than warm days in the summer sun, alternating between reading a good book on the dock and madly raking the paths.
She had a style all her own and an endlessly friendly manner that endeared her to everyone who knew her.
Gill will be much missed but would want us to know that her life was a wonderful one and, as she would have said, “I had good innings.”
Cremation has taken place and a celebration of Gill’s life will be held Sunday, May 26 from 3-6 pm at Morley Bedford Funeral Home, 159 Eglinton Avenue West, Toronto.
Donations to either of the following charities would be welcomed: The Muskoka Conservancy or The Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care. And perhaps sometime you might buy a coffee for someone who’s down on their luck, as Gill often did herself. When you do, tell them it’s from Gill.
